A Volvo XC40 raises the same handful of money questions as any car here. What does it cost to buy? Which COE does it need? What is the road tax, and what will insurance run to? This guide answers each one from dated figures.
Insurance premiums are examples for a single stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own quote depends on your details.
Which XC40s are there?
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows one XC40 on sale. It is an SUV made in China:
- XC40 Mild Hybrid B4 Plus: petrol-electric, 1,969cc, 194bhp
Our quote form also lists older and electric XC40s:
- XC40 T4 and T5: 1,969cc
- XC40 75 kWh: electric
- XC40 Recharge Plus 69 kWh, and the MY23 version: electric
The insurance figures below are for the XC40 T4 (1,969cc). Most of our insurers price that version.
What does it cost to buy?
As listed on 2026-10-10, the XC40 Mild Hybrid B4 Plus was S$298,000, with COE included in the list price that day.
That figure will move with the COE. It also depends on what the seller includes. Ask for a full breakdown before you compare two offers.
Which COE does it need?
The price page's COE section covers the XC40 T4. With a 1,969cc engine, above 1,600cc, it needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
The COE page shows later rounds. COE results change twice a month, so the figure you face may differ.
What is the road tax?
For the 1,969cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$1,175.74 a year, before any age surcharge. It was checked on 2026-10-19. The T4, the T5 and the B4 on sale share that engine size.
An XC40 kept past 10 years pays a surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The electric XC40s pay road tax by motor power instead. The road tax page works it out.
What does insurance cost?
The Volvo XC40 price page prices one case:
- Car: XC40 T4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% NCD, no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$886.61. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,105.31. That gap is S$1,218.70, or 137% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Only one insurer on our panel has no online price for the XC40 yet.
How big is the excess?
Most plans carry S$500, S$600, S$750 or S$800. Some carry S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one carries S$0. The second-lowest premium, S$980.47, has a S$2,500 excess. The lowest, S$886.61, has S$600.
Are any prices estimates?
Yes. Some prices on the page are marked as estimates, read from a published table. Your quote from that insurer may differ.
What changes the premium?
The price page re-prices the XC40 with one change at a time. Lowest prices:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,343.20, S$456.59 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,343.20, S$456.59 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,343.20, S$456.59 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$886.61, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$931.07, S$44.46 more
- A car 8 years old: S$811.71, S$74.90 less
Losing the NCD adds 51% to the lowest price. A younger driver lands on the same figure. The older driver pays no more. A new XC40 costs a little more to insure than a 3-year-old one, and an 8-year-old one costs less.
These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by different amounts.
If you are moving from another car, ask your current insurer for proof of your NCD. Without it, the new policy may start from a lower discount. That one detail moves this car's lowest price more than any other.
How does it compare with similar cars?
The price page sets six similar cars beside the XC40, for the same driver and car age:
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
- Lexus RX: S$972.39
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- Toyota Voxy: S$793.75
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
They average S$867.25. The XC40 is 2% above it. Four of the six are cheaper to insure, and the two Lexus models cost more. Other Volvo models are on the Volvo car insurance page.
What costs can only you work out?
- Parking: your HDB or condo season parking, plus parking at work and in town. Check your own block's rate.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on where you go and when.
- Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what the warranty and any service package cover.
- Depreciation: what you lose depends on what you pay and what the car fetches when you sell.
