Car insurance explained

Insuring an older car, or one with a renewed COE

Insurers price a car by its age, and many stop offering comprehensive cover online once it is 10 or 15 years old. Here is what that looks like today, from a new car to one with a renewed COE.

Prices as of 28 Oct 2026, GST included.

Questions people ask

Can I get comprehensive insurance for a car over 15 years old?

Online, from fewer insurers: 0 of those we compare price comprehensive cover for a 16-year-old car, against 0 for a 10-year-old one. Others offer third party, fire and theft instead.

Is comprehensive worth it on an old car?

It pays for damage to your own car, up to the car's market value. As an old car's value falls, the gap between comprehensive and third party cover can be more than the car would fetch, so many owners of older cars switch to third party, fire and theft.
