Off-peak cars: insurance and road tax
A Revised Off-Peak Car (the red plate) is driven mainly outside weekday working hours, and pays less road tax and, at most insurers, less for insurance.
LTA rules checked on 19 Oct 2026; prices as of 28 Oct 2026, GST included.
The off-peak rules
- Free to use on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and on weekdays before 7am and after 7pm.
- On weekdays from 7am to 7pm it needs an e-Day Licence, S$20 for the day.
- Road tax is up to S$500 a year less than a normal car's, with a minimum of S$70 a year, renewed only for 12 months at a time.
- A new car registered as an off-peak car gets up to S$17,000 off its COE and Additional Registration Fee; a converted or imported one gets a cash rebate of up to S$1,100 every 6 months.
From LTA. New cars can only be registered under, or converted to, the Revised Off-Peak Car scheme.
