Volvo S80 DRIVe running costs in Singapore, with insurance prices

The Volvo S80 DRIVe in Singapore: road tax on its 1,560cc engine, the COE rule, and insurance from 13 insurers, including the excess on the lowest price.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volvo S80 DRIVe on our quote form has a 1,560cc engine, which keeps its road tax moderate. Its insurance, though, sits above most of the similar cars on its price page. This guide covers each cost, from the COE to the ones that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.

The car we price

The new-car list has no entry for the S80 DRIVe on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form prices the S80 DRIVe, with a 1,560cc engine. All figures below are for it.

The COE rule

The price page states that the S80 DRIVe, with its 1,560cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page shows the latest.

On a registered car, the COE has a fixed end date. Check it before you agree a price, since it shapes what the car is worth to you.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$719.44 a year for a 1,560cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Once a car passes 10 years, a surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page covers other engines.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volvo S80 DRIVe price page prices this case:

  • Car: S80 DRIVe, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver:

  • 13 insurers give a price
  • The lowest premium is S$822.36
  • The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,673.14
  • The gap is S$850.78, or 103% on top

All prices include 9% GST. Three insurers on our panel have no online price. Two have none yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.

The excess on the lowest price

The excess is what you pay on each claim. The lowest premium here comes with a S$2,500 excess. Ten plans carry S$600, three S$500 and three S$800. One plan has none. So the plan at the top of the list may not be the one that costs least if you claim. Compare the two figures together.

How the premium moves

With one detail changed, the price page shows these lowest prices:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,149.24, S$326.88 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,149.24, S$326.88 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,149.24, S$326.88 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$886.61, S$64.25 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$794.98, S$27.38 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$790.50, S$31.86 less

Losing the NCD adds 40% at the lowest price. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same figure. A driver aged 65 pays S$64.25 more, with one fewer insurer quoting.

Car age moves the price the other way. Both a new car and an 8-year-old car start below the 3-year-old one on the page.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Who it suits on cost

  • A settled driver with a full NCD: from S$822.36, though that plan's excess is high.
  • A buyer of an older car: an 8-year-old one is a little cheaper to insure.
  • A household with a younger driver: the floor rises by S$326.88, so price that case first.
  • An older main driver: a modest rise of S$64.25.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The S80 DRIVe is 12% above it. Five of the six cost less to insure. Only the Mazda 3 costs more. More Volvos are on the Volvo car insurance page.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Can you carry a S$2,500 excess? If not, look past the lowest premium.
  • Who will drive the car most? A small NCD lifts the floor.
  • How long is left on the COE? It sets how long you can keep the car.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town.
  • Fuel: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.

Summary of yearly costs we can show
