Volvo S40 in Singapore, road tax, COE and car insurance compared

What a Volvo S40 1.8 costs to tax and insure in Singapore, with 14 insurers' prices and how a missing NCD or an older car changes them.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

On the Volvo S40 1.8, the NCD moves the lowest price by a modest share. A driver with no NCD pays 27% more than the standard driver. The bigger difference is between insurers. This guide sets out both, along with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.

S40 versions on our quote form

The new-car list has no entry for the S40 on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists four versions:

  • S40 1.8: 1,798cc
  • S40 2.0: 1,999cc
  • S40 2.4: 2,435cc
  • S40 2.5 T5: 2,521cc

The figures below are for the 1.8, the version most insurers quote. The larger engines pay more road tax, and their insurance will differ.

COE

The price page states that the S40 1.8, with its 1,798cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

The COE page shows the latest. If the car is registered, check how many years remain on its COE before you agree a price.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$975.16 a year for a 1,798cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Cars past 10 years pay more:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the other versions, look up the engine size on the road tax page.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volvo S40 price page prices this case:

  • Car: S40 1.8, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 14 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$861.03. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,706.38. That is S$845.35 more, or 98% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on our panel have no online price for the S40 yet.

The same driver could pay 98% more for the same S40, depending on the insurer. That gap is far larger than the NCD effect below, so the insurer you choose matters most here.

Excess

The excess is the part of each claim you pay. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Two ask S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has none. Put the excess and premium side by side on each quote.

How the price moves

With one detail changed and the rest kept, the lowest price becomes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,093.14, S$232.11 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,093.14, S$232.11 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,093.14, S$232.11 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$861.03, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$886.61, S$25.58 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$787.96, S$73.07 less

Losing the NCD adds 27% at the lowest price. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same. An older driver pays the same as the standard driver, with one fewer insurer quoting.

An 8-year-old S40 costs S$73.07 less to insure than a 3-year-old one at the lowest price. A new one costs S$25.58 more.

These are lowest prices only. Plans higher up may move by other amounts. When you compare, ask for the case that matches your own household, not only the standard driver.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: a missing NCD adds a smaller share here than the gap between insurers.
  • For: an older driver pays no more at the lowest price.
  • For: an older car is cheaper to insure.
  • Against: four of six similar cars cost less to insure.
  • Against: some plans carry an excess of S$2,500 or more.

Their average lowest price is S$741.89. The S40 is 16% above it. Four of the six cost less to insure, and the E-Class and the 5 Series match it at S$861.03. More Volvo models are on the Volvo car insurance page.

Costs that depend on you

  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and the hours you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service history.
