Volvo V50 in Singapore, a look at road tax and insurance costs

The Volvo V50 1.6 D2 in Singapore: S$719.44 road tax, the COE rule, and insurance from 8 insurers that costs more than six similar cars.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volvo V50 1.6 D2 has a mixed insurance picture. The gap between insurers is 40%, and losing your NCD moves the lowest price only 13%. But only eight insurers price it online, and all six similar cars on its page cost less to insure. This guide sets that out, with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.

V50 versions on the form

The new-car list has no entry for the V50 on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists three versions:

  • V50 1.6 D2: 1,560cc
  • V50 2.0 (A): 1,999cc
  • V50 2.4: 2,435cc

The figures below are for the 1.6 D2, the version most insurers quote. The 2.0 and 2.4 pay more road tax.

COE

The price page states that the V50 1.6 D2, with its 1,560cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page shows the latest. On a registered car, check how long the COE has left.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$719.44 a year for a 1,560cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Once the car is more than 10 years old, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the 2.0 and 2.4, see the road tax page.

Insurance from a short list

The Volvo V50 price page prices this case:

  • Car: V50 1.6 D2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver:

  • Insurers that price it: 8
  • Lowest premium: S$1,019.83
  • Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$1,423.46
  • Gap: S$403.63, or 40% more

All prices include 9% GST. Eight insurers on our panel have no online price for the V50. Seven have none yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.

With so many insurers missing, a direct enquiry to one you already use may be worth making.

Excess

The excess is what you pay on each claim. Five plans here carry S$600 and three carry S$800. One sits at S$500. Two ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none. With a 40% gap between insurers, the excess may decide which plan suits you.

How the premium moves

With one detail changed and the rest held, the lowest price becomes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,154.84, S$135.01 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$135.01 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$135.01 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,107.78, S$87.95 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,095.31, S$75.48 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$932.41, S$87.42 less

Losing the NCD adds just 13% at the lowest price. A driver aged 27 pays the same. A driver aged 65 pays S$87.95 more, with seven insurers quoting.

Car age moves the price too, in both directions. An 8-year-old V50 costs S$87.42 less to insure at the lowest price than a 3-year-old one. A new one would cost S$75.48 more.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.
