If you own a Volvo S80 or are looking at one, two yearly bills come with it no matter how far you drive: road tax and insurance. This guide sets out both for the S80 2.0, the version most of our insurers quote. It also covers the COE and the costs that depend on you.
All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.
S80 versions on our quote form
The new-car list has no entry for the S80 on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists seven versions:
- S80 T4: 1,596cc
- S80 T5: 1,969cc
- S80 2.0: 1,999cc
- S80 2.0T: 1,999cc
- S80 2.5T: 2,521cc
- S80 3.0 T6: 2,953cc
- S80 3.2: 3,192cc
The figures below are for the S80 2.0. The 2.0T shares its engine size, so its road tax is the same. The others differ.
COE
The price page states that the S80 2.0, with its 1,999cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
The COE page has the latest. For a registered car, find the COE end date on its papers. It tells you how long you can keep the car on the road as it is.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$1,210.92 a year for a 1,999cc engine, before any age surcharge.
After 10 years, the surcharge climbs each year:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page has the figures for the other engine sizes.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volvo S80 price page prices this case:
- Car: S80 2.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver, 13 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$886.61. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,756.25. That is S$869.64 more, or 98% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Three insurers on our panel have no online price. Two have none for this model yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.
Excess
The excess is your share of each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. Three sit at S$500 and three at S$800. Two ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none. Look at it beside each premium.
How the premium moves
With one detail changed, the price page shows these lowest prices:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,154.84, S$268.23 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$268.23 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$268.23 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$886.61, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$931.07, S$44.46 more
- A car 8 years old: S$811.71, S$74.90 less
Without a full NCD, the lowest price rises 30%. A driver aged 27 lands on the same figure. An older driver pays the same as the standard driver, with one fewer insurer quoting.
An older S80 is cheaper to insure. The 8-year-old car comes in S$74.90 under the 3-year-old one at the lowest price. A new one costs S$44.46 more.
These are lowest prices only. Plans further up may move by other amounts.
Pros and cons on insurance cost
Pros
- An older driver pays no more at the lowest price.
- An older car is cheaper to insure.
- Losing the NCD adds a smaller sum than the spread between insurers.
Cons
- Four of six similar cars cost less to insure.
- Some plans ask an excess of S$2,500 or more.
- Road tax on the 1,999cc engine is a large fixed cost.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
- Lexus RX: S$972.39
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Toyota Voxy: S$793.75
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
Their average lowest price is S$867.25. The S80 is 2% above that. Four of the six are cheaper to insure: the E-Class, the 5 Series, the Voxy and the Harrier. The two Lexus models cost more. More Volvos are on the Volvo car insurance page.
Costs that depend on you
