Volvo V40 in Singapore, what road tax and car insurance cost

The Volvo V40 D2 in Singapore: S$719.44 road tax, the COE rule for its 1,560cc engine and insurance from 15 insurers for different drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volvo V40 on our price page is the D2, with a 1,560cc engine. Its road tax is moderate, and almost every insurer we compare gives it an online price. The question is which of those prices you end up with. This guide covers the COE, road tax and insurance, then the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.

V40 versions on the form

The new-car list has no entry for the V40 on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists five versions:

  • V40 T2: 1,498cc
  • V40 D2: 1,560cc
  • V40 T4 R-Design: 1,596cc
  • V40 T4 R-Design 2.0: 1,969cc
  • V40 T5: 1,969cc

The figures below are for the D2, the version most insurers quote. The 1,969cc versions pay more road tax, and every version is priced on its own.

COE

The price page states that the V40 D2, with its 1,560cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest round.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$719.44 a year for a 1,560cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Cars more than 10 years old pay a surcharge:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the other versions, see the road tax page.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volvo V40 price page prices this case:

  • Car: V40 D2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 15 insurers give a price, and only one on our panel has none online yet. The lowest premium is S$764.82. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,673.14. That is S$908.32 more, or 119% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The same driver can pay more than twice as much for the same V40. With this many insurers in the running, a careful comparison is likely to turn up a lower price.

Excess

The excess is the part of each claim you pay. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has none. Read the excess with every premium.

How the premium moves

With one detail changed and the rest held, the lowest price becomes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,098.76, S$333.94 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,098.76, S$333.94 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,098.76, S$333.94 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$764.82, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$787.96, S$23.14 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$700.28, S$64.54 less

Without a full NCD, the lowest price rises 44%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same. A driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver, with one fewer insurer quoting.

Car age moves the price only a little. A new V40 D2 costs S$23.14 more at the lowest price, and an 8-year-old one S$64.54 less.

These are lowest prices only. Plans higher up may move by other amounts.

Your NCD in dollars

On this car, a full 50% NCD is worth S$333.94 a year at the lowest price. If you claim, part of it may go. Some plans let you protect it for an extra charge. Ask what that costs before you add it.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The V40 is 4% above it. Three of the six cost less to insure: the Sienta, the Corolla Altis and the Freed. The Mazda 3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLB cost more. More Volvos are on the Volvo car insurance page.

Before you pay a deposit

  • Check the version: the papers should match the quote you got.
  • Check the COE end date: it sets how long you can use the car.
  • Check the road tax: when it is due, and whether the 10-year surcharge is near.
  • Get your own quotes: with your own NCD and driver details.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
  • Fuel: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and the hours you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
