The Volvo S90 on our price page has a 2,922cc engine, and that sets a high road tax. Its insurance spread is wide too. For the same driver and car, the highest of the insurers' lowest plans is 213% above the lowest premium. This guide sets out both, with the COE and the costs that depend on you.
All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.
Which S90 this covers
The new-car list has no entry for the S90 on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists four versions:
- S90: 2,922cc
- S90 B5 (the B5 entry on the form): 1,969cc
- S90 T5 Momentum: 1,969cc
- S90 T6 Inscription: 1,969cc
The figures below are for the S90 (2,922cc), the version most insurers quote. The three 1,969cc versions pay less road tax, and their insurance will differ. Quote yours by its exact name.
COE
The price page states that the S90, with its 2,922cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
The COE page shows the latest. If the car is registered, find out when its COE ends before you agree a price.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$2,293.60 a year for a 2,922cc engine, before any age surcharge.
From 10 years on, the surcharge climbs:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
On a base this size, each step adds a large sum. The road tax page has the figure for the 1,969cc versions.
Insurance: a very wide spread
The Volvo S90 price page prices this case:
- Car: S90, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver:
- Insurers that price it: 10
- Lowest premium: S$1,071.25
- Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$3,358.27
- Gap: S$2,287.02, or 213% more
All prices include 9% GST. Six insurers on our panel have no online price. Five have none for this model yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.
The gap here is more than twice the lowest premium. If you renew without comparing, you could pay far more than you need to.
Excess
The excess is your share of each claim. Six plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500 or S$800. Two ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none. Check this figure on every quote.
How the premium moves
With one detail changed and the rest held, the lowest price becomes:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,391.98, S$320.73 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,391.98, S$320.73 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,391.98, S$320.73 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,170.66, S$99.41 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,103.48, S$32.23 more
- A car 8 years old: S$1,019.66, S$51.59 less
Losing the NCD adds 30% at the lowest price. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD lands on the same figure.
An older driver pays S$99.41 more, with only nine insurers quoting that case. A new S90 costs S$32.23 more to insure, and an 8-year-old one S$51.59 less.
These are lowest prices only. With insurers this far apart, dearer plans may move by very different amounts.
Who it suits on cost
- It suits a settled main driver with a full NCD who can carry a high road tax bill.
- It costs more for a younger driver or one without a full NCD, and a little more for an older driver.
- It rewards shopping around, since the spread between insurers is so wide.

- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58

Their average lowest price is S$1,137.15. The S90 is 6% below it. Two of the six cost less to insure: the Toyota Alphard and the Toyota Camry. The four Audi models cost more. More Volvos are on the Volvo car insurance page.
