20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volvo V90 Cross Country B5 costs more to insure than any of the six similar cars on its price page. Its lowest premium for the standard driver is S$1,201.89. On the other hand, every plan on the page keeps the excess at S$800 or less. This guide covers both, along with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.

The version priced

The new-car list has no entry for the V90 Cross Country on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form prices the V90 Cross Country B5, with a 1,969cc engine. All figures below are for it.

COE

The price page states that the V90 Cross Country B5, with its 1,969cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

The COE page has the latest round. If the car is registered, find out when its COE ends before you agree a price.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$1,175.74 a year for a 1,969cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Cars more than 10 years old pay a surcharge:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page covers other engine sizes.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volvo V90 Cross Country price page prices this case:

  • Car: V90 Cross Country B5, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver:

  • Insurers that price it: 10
  • Lowest premium: S$1,201.89
  • Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$1,930.78
  • Gap: S$728.89, or 61% more

All prices include 9% GST. Six insurers on our panel have no online price. Five have none for this model yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote. If you already hold a policy with one of them, ask it for a direct quote.

Excess: low across the board

The excess is what you pay on each claim. On this car, no plan asks more than S$800. Eight plans carry S$600, three S$500 and three S$800. One plan has none. So the premium is the main thing to compare here, along with what each plan covers.

How the premium moves

With one detail changed and the rest held, the lowest price becomes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,428.19, S$226.30 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$226.30 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$226.30 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,354.71, S$152.82 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,262.63, S$60.74 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$1,147.88, S$54.01 less

Losing the NCD adds 19% at the lowest price. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD lands on the same figure. A driver aged 65 pays S$152.82 more.

A new car costs S$60.74 more to insure at the lowest price, with nine insurers quoting. An 8-year-old one costs S$54.01 less.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

What to check on a plan

  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop.
  • Older drivers: if the main driver is 65 or more, ask for that exact quote, since the floor rises.
  • NCD protection: whether it is offered and what it adds to the premium.
  • Named drivers: who else may use the car, and at what cost.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
  • Fuel: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask what any remaining warranty covers.
