Volkswagen Touareg TDI in Singapore, a costs check on tax and insurance

The Volkswagen Touareg TDI 3.0 in Singapore: S$2,385.10 road tax, a Category B COE, and insurance that starts below every similar car on its page.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

On cost alone, the Volkswagen Touareg TDI 3.0 is a car of two halves. Its road tax is high, set by a 3,000cc engine. Yet its insurance for a settled driver starts well below all six similar cars on its price page. The catch is the driver: without a full NCD, the floor nearly doubles.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your details.

The car on our quote form

The new-car list has no entry for the Touareg TDI on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form prices the Touareg TDI 3.0, with a 3,000cc engine. Every figure below is for it.

COE

The price page states that the Touareg TDI 3.0, with a 3,000cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

The COE page has the latest. On a registered car, ask when the COE ends. That date limits how long the car can stay on the road as it is.

Road tax: the largest fixed cost

LTA's formula gives S$2,385.10 a year for a 3,000cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Once the car passes 10 years, the surcharge climbs each year:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On a base this size, each step adds a large sum. If the car is close to 10 years old, plan for it. The road tax page has other engine sizes.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volkswagen Touareg TDI price page prices this case:

  • Car: Touareg TDI 3.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver:

  • 13 insurers give a price
  • S$787.96 is the lowest premium
  • S$2,396.25 is the least the insurer with the highest lowest plan asks
  • S$1,608.29 separates them, or 204% on top

All prices include 9% GST. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Touareg TDI yet.

The gap is larger than the lowest premium itself. So comparing quotes is well worth the time on this car.

Excess

The excess is your share of each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. One asks S$2,500 and one has none. Most plans keep the excess low, so the premium is where they differ most.

Who it suits on cost

The price page holds every detail but one and shows the lowest price:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,539.12, S$751.16 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,539.12, S$751.16 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,327.10, S$539.14 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$811.71, S$23.75 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less

It suits

  • A settled main driver with a full NCD: the S$787.96 floor.
  • An older driver: aged 65, the same floor, with one fewer insurer quoting.
  • A buyer of an older car: an 8-year-old one starts S$66.37 lower.

It costs more for

  • A driver with no NCD: 95% more, at S$1,539.12.
  • A younger driver: aged 27 with 30% NCD, the same S$1,539.12.
  • A driver with 20% NCD: S$539.14 more.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six cars with large engines:

Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The Touareg TDI sits 37% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. Fewer insurers price most of these rivals. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Can you carry the road tax? At S$2,385.10 before any surcharge, it is the largest fixed yearly cost here.
  • Who will drive it most? The NCD decides the insurance floor.
  • How much COE is left? It shapes the price and how long you can use the car.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere.
  • Fuel: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service history.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
