Volkswagen Caddy costs in Singapore, from road tax to car insurance

The Volkswagen Caddy on private plates in Singapore: road tax on its 1,390cc engine, the COE rule and insurance prices from 13 insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

This guide looks at the Volkswagen Caddy as a private car in Singapore, priced for private use. It covers the COE rule for its engine, road tax and car insurance, then the costs that depend on you. The insurance spread on this car is wide, so that section gets the most room.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.

The Caddy on our quote form

The new-car list has no entry for the Caddy on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. The quote form lists two versions:

  • Caddy: 1,390cc
  • Caddy 2.0 Eco Life: 1,983cc

The figures below are for the Caddy (1,390cc), the version most insurers quote. The 2.0 Eco Life has a larger engine, so its road tax will differ. Quote it by name if that is your car.

The COE rule

The price page states that the Caddy, with its 1,390cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is higher, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest. On a registered car, check the COE expiry date.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$619.74 a year for the 1,390cc engine, before any age surcharge.

The surcharge applies once a car passes 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the 2.0 Eco Life, look up 1,983cc on the road tax page.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volkswagen Caddy price page prices this case:

  • Car: Caddy, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 13 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$700.28. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,825.52. That is S$1,125.24 more, or 161% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Caddy yet.

The gap here is larger than the lowest premium itself. So two quotes for the same Caddy and the same driver can be far apart.

Excess

The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. Ten plans on this page carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan asks S$2,500, and one has none. Look at both figures on every quote.

How the premium moves

The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,111.64, S$411.36 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,111.64, S$411.36 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,111.64, S$411.36 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$709.83, S$9.55 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less

The NCD is the lever that matters. Without a full one, the lowest price rises 59%. The same figure applies to a driver aged 27 with 30% NCD. An older driver pays the same as the standard driver.

Car age matters little. A new Caddy costs just S$9.55 more at the lowest price. An 8-year-old one costs S$57.86 less.

These are lowest prices only. Plans further up the list may move by other amounts, and one fewer insurer quotes some cases.

What to check on a plan

  • Use of the car: these prices are for private use. Make sure the policy matches how you use the car.
  • Excess: for the main driver and any named driver.
  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop.
  • NCD protection: whether it is offered and what it costs.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six cars:

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Caddy sits 5% below it. Three of the six cost less to insure: the Toyota Sienta, the Toyota Corolla Altis and the Honda Freed. The Mazda 3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLB cost more. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
  • Fuel: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: your routes and when you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later, which turns on the COE left.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Caddy (1,390cc):

  • Road tax: S$619.74 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$700.28 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,111.64
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$642.42

For reference, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
