The Volkswagen New Beetle has a short insurance list. Only nine insurers price it online, and seven on our panel do not. On the plus side, every plan that does appear carries a low excess. This guide covers that, plus the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.
All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.
The versions on our quote form
The new-car list has no entry for the New Beetle on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here. The quote form lists two versions:
- New Beetle 1.4: 1,390cc
- New Beetle 1.6: 1,595cc
The figures below are for the 1.4, the version most insurers quote. The 1.6 has a larger engine, so its road tax and premiums differ.
The COE
The price page states that the New Beetle 1.4, with its 1,390cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. With more power, it needs a Category B COE.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest figures.
On a car that is already registered, the COE comes with a fixed end date. Ask for it before you agree a price.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$619.74 a year for the 1,390cc engine, before any age surcharge.
A surcharge applies to cars more than 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the car's registration date to see which step, if any, applies. For the 1.6, use the road tax page.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volkswagen New Beetle price page prices this case:
- Car: New Beetle 1.4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver:
- Insurers that price it: 9
- Lowest premium: S$660.69
- Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$1,151.41
- Gap: S$490.72, or 74% more
All prices include 9% GST. Seven insurers on our panel have no online price for the New Beetle. Six have none yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.
If you already hold a policy with one of those seven, ask it directly for a price on your car. That widens your choice.
Low excesses
The excess is what you pay on each claim before the insurer pays. On this car, every plan sits between S$500 and S$800. Eight carry S$600, two S$500 and three S$800. There is no plan here with a very large excess. So the premium is the main figure to compare.
How the price moves
With one detail changed, the price page shows these lowest prices:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,017.12, S$356.43 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,017.12, S$356.43 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,017.12, S$356.43 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$660.69, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$666.79, S$6.10 more
- A car 8 years old: S$604.07, S$56.62 less
Without a full NCD, the lowest price rises 54%. A driver aged 27 and a driver with 20% NCD land on that same figure. A driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver, though only eight insurers quote that case.
The car's age makes little difference. A new one would cost S$6.10 more to insure at the lowest price, and an 8-year-old one S$56.62 less.
These are lowest prices only. Other plans may change by other amounts.
