Volkswagen CrossPolo in Singapore, the yearly costs and insurance

The Volkswagen CrossPolo 1.2 in Singapore: S$507.12 road tax, the COE rule and insurance where losing your NCD nearly doubles the lowest price.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

For the Volkswagen CrossPolo, one figure stands out on its price page. A driver with no NCD pays 92% more than the standard driver at the lowest price. So the main driver's record matters a great deal here. This guide covers that, along with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.

The CrossPolo versions

The new-car list has no entry for the CrossPolo on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form lists two versions:

  • CrossPolo 1.2 12v: 1,198cc
  • CrossPolo 1.4 16v: 1,390cc

The insurance figures below are for the 1.2 12v, the version most insurers quote. The 1.4 has a larger engine, so its road tax and premiums will differ.

COE

The price page states that the CrossPolo 1.2 12v, with a 1,198cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If the power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest. When you look at a registered car, ask when its COE runs out.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$507.12 a year for a 1,198cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Once a car is more than 10 years old, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the 1.4's engine size, use the road tax page.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volkswagen CrossPolo price page prices this case:

  • Car: CrossPolo 1.2 12v, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 12 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$660.69. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,655.39. That is S$994.70 more, or 151% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Four insurers on our panel have no online price. Three have none for this model yet, and one does not list it on its online quote.

Excess

The excess is the part of each claim you pay yourself. Half the plans here carry S$600. Three sit at S$500. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has no excess. The range is wide, so read it on every quote.

The driver's record is the big lever

The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,269.08, S$608.39 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,241.26, S$580.57 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,019.98, S$359.29 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$660.69, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$646.06, S$14.63 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$604.07, S$56.62 less

Without an NCD, the lowest price is 92% higher. A young driver aged 27 pays nearly as much. Even with 20% NCD, the floor sits S$359.29 above the standard driver's.

The car's age works differently here. Both a new car and an 8-year-old car start lower than the 3-year-old one on the page. An older driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Protecting what you have

If you hold a 50% NCD on this car, it is worth S$608.39 a year at the lowest price. Some plans offer NCD protection for an extra charge. Ask what it costs, and what claims it covers, before you decide.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:

Their average lowest price is S$688.21. The CrossPolo is 4% below that. Three of the six are cheaper to insure: the Toyota C-HR, the Nissan Qashqai and the Honda Jazz / Fit. The three Mercedes-Benz models cost more. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Questions to ask before you commit

  • Who is the main driver? On this car, the NCD decides most of the premium.
  • How old is the car? Check the road tax surcharge date and the COE end date.
  • What excess can you carry? Some plans ask S$2,500 or more.
  • Is the version right? The 1.2 and the 1.4 are priced separately.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere.
  • Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
