Volkswagen Beetle in Singapore, what it costs to own and insure today

The Volkswagen Beetle 1.2 TSI in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule and car insurance where insurers' prices differ by 232%.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volkswagen Beetle's price page shows a very wide spread of insurance prices. For the same driver and car, the highest of the insurers' lowest plans is 232% above the lowest premium. That makes this guide mostly about insurance. It also covers the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.

Beetle versions on our quote form

The new-car list has no entry for the Beetle on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. The quote form carries six versions:

  • Beetle 1300: 1,285cc
  • Beetle 1.2 TSI: 1,200cc
  • Beetle 1.4 TSI: 1,400cc
  • Beetle 1.8T: 1,781cc
  • Beetle 2.0 Highline: 1,984cc
  • Beetle 2.0 TSI SPRT: 1,984cc

The insurance figures below are for the 1.2 TSI, the version most insurers quote. The other versions have different engines, so their road tax and premiums differ. Quote yours by its exact name.

The COE rule

The price page states the rule for the Beetle 1.2 TSI, with a 1,200cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If the power is higher, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. These change every round, and the COE page shows the latest. On a registered car, ask when its COE expires.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$508.30 a year for the 1,200cc engine, before any age surcharge.

Once a car is past 10 years old, a surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The larger-engined Beetles pay more road tax. The road tax page has the figure for each engine size.

Insurance: a very wide spread

The Volkswagen Beetle price page prices this case:

  • Car: Beetle 1.2 TSI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

Here is what that driver sees:

  • Insurers that price it: 15
  • Lowest premium: S$604.07
  • Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$2,006.37
  • The gap: S$1,402.30, or 232% more

All prices include 9% GST. Only one insurer on our panel has no online price for the Beetle yet.

The gap here is more than twice the lowest premium. If you renew without comparing, you could land anywhere in that range.

Excess

The excess is your share of each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has no excess. Check this figure on each quote, since the plans with a low premium are not always the ones with a low excess.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price with one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$993.68, S$389.61 more
  • 20% NCD: S$993.68, S$389.61 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$993.68, S$389.61 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less

Without a full NCD, the lowest price rises 64%. The no-NCD driver, the 20% driver and the driver aged 27 all land on one figure. The driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver.

Car age moves things only a little. A new Beetle 1.2 TSI costs S$18.27 more to insure at the lowest price. An 8-year-old one costs S$51.16 less.

These are lowest prices only. With a spread this wide, dearer plans may move by quite different amounts.

Against similar cars

The price page sets six cars beside the Beetle, for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$688.21. The Beetle sits 12% below that. Two of the six cost less to insure, though: the Toyota C-HR and the Nissan Qashqai. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

What to check on a plan

  • Excess: for the main driver and any younger named driver.
  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop.
  • NCD protection: whether it is offered, and its cost.
  • Named drivers: who else can use the car, and at what price.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
  • Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: your routes and when you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service history.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later, which depends on the COE left.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Beetle 1.2 TSI (1,200cc):

  • Road tax: S$508.30 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$604.07 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$993.68
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$552.91

For reference, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
