Volkswagen Golf costs in Singapore, new or used, with insurance prices

What a Volkswagen Golf costs to buy, tax and insure in Singapore, with list prices as listed, the COE rule and example premiums by driver and car age.

20 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

The Volkswagen Golf has been on sale in Singapore through many generations. That means you can buy one new or pick from a wide spread of used cars. Either way, the costs come down to the same few items: the price, the COE, road tax and car insurance.

This guide works through each one. The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver on 20 October 2026, not a quote for you.

Golfs on sale new

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows four Golf hatchbacks, all made in Germany:

  • Golf Mild Hybrid 1.5 eTSI DSG Life Plus: petrol-electric, 1,498cc
  • Golf Mild Hybrid 1.5 eTSI DSG R-Line: petrol-electric, 1,498cc
  • Golf GTI 2.0 TSI DSG: petrol, 1,984cc, 261bhp
  • Golf R 2.0 TSI DSG Performance Pack: petrol, 1,984cc, 329bhp

As listed on 2026-10-10, COE included in the list price that day:

  • 1.5 eTSI Life Plus: S$195,900
  • 1.5 eTSI R-Line: S$202,900
  • GTI 2.0: S$278,900
  • R 2.0 Performance Pack: S$329,900

List prices shift with every COE round. Check what an offer includes before you compare totals.

Golfs on our quote form

Our quote form holds sixteen Golf versions. They include the 1.0 TSI (999cc), 1.2 TSI (1,197cc), 1.4 TSI (1,395cc) and 2.0 (1,968cc), plus Golf Plus, SV, Variant and Estate bodies.

The insurance figures here are for the Golf A7 1.4 TSI (1,395cc). Most of our insurers price that version. So the figures fit a used Golf of that type best.

The COE question

For the Golf A7 1.4 TSI and its 1,395cc engine, the COE category turns on power. It needs Category A if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs Category B if its power is more.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. A used car carries the COE it was registered with, for the years left. When that COE runs out, the owner must renew it or take the car off the road. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax, and the surcharge on older cars

For the 1,395cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$622.66 a year, before any age surcharge. This was checked on 2026-10-19.

Older Golfs pay more once they pass 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The newer 1.5 and the 2.0 GTI and R have different engine sizes, so their road tax differs. The road tax page covers them.

Insurance for a typical driver

The Volkswagen Golf price page prices one case:

  • Car: Golf A7 1.4 TSI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% NCD, no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$700.28. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,973.92. That is S$1,273.64 more, or 182% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

That is a wide gap for one car and one driver. It is the plainest reason to compare before you renew.

The excess

Excess on this page runs from S$0 to S$3,000. The second-lowest plan carries an excess of S$2,500. Most others sit at S$500, S$600 or S$750. Weigh the excess against the premium, since you pay it on each claim.

How car age and driver change the price

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • A new car, registered this year: S$703.95, S$3.67 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less
  • No NCD (0%): S$1,019.46, S$319.18 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,019.46, S$319.18 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,019.46, S$319.18 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same

For a used buyer, the useful line is the 8-year-old car. Its lowest price is lower than for a 3-year-old Golf. Some insurers stop pricing older cars online past a certain age, so check how many still quote yours.

The bigger swing is the NCD. Without it, the lowest price is 46% higher. If you are moving from another car, check that your NCD carries over.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

They average S$735.99. The Golf comes in 5% below that, and three of them are cheaper to insure. Other models from the make are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Before you pay a deposit on a used Golf

  • COE expiry date: check the years left and what renewal would involve.
  • Registration date: it sets the car's age for insurance and for the road tax surcharge.
  • Service records: ask for the history and check it against the maker's schedule.
  • Outstanding loan: confirm the car is free of any loan before you pay.
  • Insurance quote first: price the exact version and year before you commit.
  • Your NCD: have your current insurer's NCD letter ready.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and timing.
  • Wear and repairs: tyres, brakes and a battery come up over the years.
  • Depreciation: what the car loses depends on what you pay and what it fetches later.

Summary of yearly costs we can show
