Volkswagen Tiguan against its rivals on insurance and running costs

How the Volkswagen Tiguan's insurance, road tax and list price compare in Singapore with six similar cars, using dated example premiums.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A Volkswagen Tiguan buyer usually has a few other cars in mind. This piece sets the Tiguan beside six similar cars from its price page, on cost alone: insurance first, then road tax, COE and list price.

Every premium below is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how the cars compare. It is not your own price.

The Tiguan in brief

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has two Tiguans on sale. Both are SUVs made in Germany, mild hybrids with a 1,498cc engine and 129bhp:

  • Tiguan 1.5 eTSI Life: S$216,900
  • Tiguan 1.5 eTSI Life Plus: S$222,900

Those prices are as listed on 2026-10-10, with COE in the list price that day.

Our quote form holds nine Tiguans, from the 1.4 TSi (1,390cc) to the 2.0 TSI (1,984cc). The insurance figures are for the Tiguan Comfortline 280 (1,395cc), the one most of our insurers price.

What the Tiguan costs to insure

The Volkswagen Tiguan price page prices this case:

  • Car: Tiguan Comfortline 280, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% NCD, no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$735.55. The insurer with the dearest lowest plan asks at least S$1,825.52. That is S$1,089.97 more, or 148% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

One point to note: the lowest premium carries an excess of S$2,500. The next plan up, at S$754.04, has a S$500 excess. Across the page, excesses run from S$0 to S$3,000.

How its price moves

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,083.50, S$347.95 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,083.50, S$347.95 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,083.50, S$347.95 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, S$76.16 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$704.67, S$30.88 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$710.76, S$24.79 less

Two lines stand out. Losing your NCD adds 47% to the lowest price. And a new Tiguan is cheaper to insure here than a 3-year-old one.

The rivals, one by one

Each figure is the lowest price for the same driver and car age, from each car's own price page.

Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 has a lowest price of S$927.36, from 12 insurers. That is the highest of the six. On insurance cost, the Tiguan comes out lower.

BMW X1

The BMW X1, with a 1,499cc engine, starts at S$811.71 from 15 insurers. The Tiguan's lowest price sits below it.

Mercedes-Benz GLB

The Mercedes-Benz GLB starts at S$787.96, from 11 insurers. Fewer insurers price it than the Tiguan, and its lowest price is higher.

Toyota Corolla Altis

The Toyota Corolla Altis starts at S$642.42, from 16 insurers. It is a sedan, not an SUV, and it is cheaper to insure than the Tiguan.

Honda Freed

The Honda Freed also starts at S$642.42, from 14 insurers. On insurance alone it comes in under the Tiguan.

Toyota Sienta

The Toyota Sienta starts at S$604.07 from 15 insurers. It is the lowest of the group.

How they compare at a glance

  • Mazda 3: S$927.36
  • BMW X1: S$811.71
  • Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
  • Volkswagen Tiguan: S$735.55
  • Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
  • Honda Freed: S$642.42
  • Toyota Sienta: S$604.07

The six rivals average S$735.99. The Tiguan costs about the same as that average. Three of them are cheaper to insure, and three are dearer.

Road tax and COE

For the Tiguan Comfortline 280's 1,395cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$622.66 a year, checked on 2026-10-19, before any age surcharge. The current 1.5 has a different engine size, so its road tax differs. The road tax page works out any engine size.

The surcharge applies once a car passes 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

For the COE, the price page says the Comfortline 280, with its 1,395cc engine, needs Category A if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs Category B if its power is more. In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has later rounds.

Who each one suits on cost

  • Tiguan: an SUV buyer whose insurance lands near the middle of this group. It suits a driver with a solid NCD who is happy to check the excess on each plan.
  • Sienta, Freed and Corolla Altis: the lowest insurance costs of the seven, for buyers led by running cost.
  • X1 and GLB: priced higher to insure than the Tiguan for this driver.
  • Mazda 3: the highest insurance figure of the group here.

Costs these figures leave out

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo.
  • Petrol and ERP: depend on your distance, routes and timing.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule and ask what the warranty covers.
  • Depreciation: depends on what you pay and what the car fetches later.

Other models from the make are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
