The Volkswagen Sportsvan 1.4 sits close to the middle of its price page's comparison group on insurance. Its road tax is moderate. What needs care is the choice of plan, since the lowest premium comes with a high excess. This guide covers each cost, from the COE to the ones that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.
The Sportsvan on our quote form
The new-car list has no entry for the Sportsvan on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form prices the Sportsvan 1.4, with a 1,395cc engine. All figures below are for it.
COE
The price page states that the Sportsvan 1.4, with a 1,395cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest round.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$622.66 a year for a 1,395cc engine, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge applies to cars more than 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page covers other engine sizes.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volkswagen Sportsvan price page prices this case:
- Car: Sportsvan 1.4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
That driver gets prices from 13 insurers. The lowest premium is S$739.39. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,825.52. That is S$1,086.13 more, or 147% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Three insurers on our panel have no online price. Two have none for this model yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.
Excess
The excess is what you pay towards each claim. The lowest premium here carries a S$2,500 excess. Nine plans carry S$600. Others sit at S$500 or S$800. Two more plans ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none.
So before you settle on the first price, look at the plans with a S$600 excess. The extra premium may be worth it if you think you might claim.
How the premium moves
The price page changes one thing at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,168.92, S$429.53 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,168.92, S$429.53 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,116.64, S$377.25 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$823.96, S$84.57 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$703.95, S$35.44 less
- A car 8 years old: S$710.76, S$28.63 less
With no NCD, the lowest price rises 58%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same. Even a 20% NCD leaves the price S$377.25 above the standard driver's.
An older driver pays S$84.57 more, with one fewer insurer quoting. On car age, both a new Sportsvan and an 8-year-old one start lower than the 3-year-old car on the page.
These are lowest prices only. Plans higher up may move by other amounts.
Keeping the NCD
Your NCD grows with each claim-free year and drops after a claim. On this car, a full 50% NCD is worth S$429.53 a year at the lowest price. Some plans let you protect it for an extra charge. Ask what it costs before you add it.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$735.99, and the Sportsvan costs about the same. Three of the six are cheaper to insure: the Sienta, the Corolla Altis and the Freed. The other three cost more. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
Questions to ask yourself
- Who will be the main driver? A small NCD lifts the floor by hundreds of dollars.
- Can you carry a S$2,500 excess? If not, the plan you choose may not be the lowest premium.
- How much COE is left? That sets how long you can keep the car.
- Is road tax due soon? Check the date and any surcharge.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
- Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
- ERP: your routes and when you drive them.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
- Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
