A Volkswagen Sharan 1.4 TSI is modest to tax, at S$625.60 a year. Insurance is harder to pin down. The same driver can pay from S$743.64 to at least S$2,209.84, and the lowest premium comes with a high excess. This guide walks through each cost so you can see where the money goes.
All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.
Two versions on the form
The new-car list has no entry for the Sharan on sale now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form lists two versions:
- Sharan 1.4 TSI: 1,400cc
- Sharan 2.0: 1,984cc
The figures below are for the 1.4 TSI, the version most insurers quote. The 2.0 has a larger engine, so its road tax is higher and its premiums differ.
The COE
The price page states that the Sharan 1.4 TSI, with its 1,400cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest.
On a car already on the road, the COE ends on a fixed date. Check it before you agree a price, since it sets how long you can use the car.
Road tax
For a 1,400cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$625.60 a year, before any age surcharge.
Once the car is more than 10 years old, the surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
For the 2.0, look up 1,984cc on the road tax page.
Insurance for a family's main driver
The Volkswagen Sharan price page prices this case:
- Car: Sharan 1.4 TSI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver:
- 13 insurers give a price
- The lowest premium is S$743.64
- The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$2,209.84
- The gap is S$1,466.20, or 197% on top
All prices include 9% GST. Three insurers on our panel have no online price. Two have none for this model yet, and one does not list it on its online quote.
The excess behind the lowest price
The excess is what you pay on each claim. The lowest premium on this page carries a S$2,500 excess. Ten plans carry S$600, and others sit at S$500 or S$800. Two more ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none.
If you would rather keep the excess low, the plan you choose may not be the first one on the list. Set the premium saving against the excess you would pay on a claim.
How the price moves
With one detail changed and the rest kept, the lowest price becomes:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,269.38, S$525.74 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,269.38, S$525.74 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,123.28, S$379.64 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$823.96, S$80.32 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$709.83, S$33.81 less
- A car 8 years old: S$710.76, S$32.88 less
With no NCD, the lowest price rises 71%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same. A 20% NCD trims the jump to S$379.64.
An older driver pays S$80.32 more, and one fewer insurer quotes that case. Both a new car and an 8-year-old one start lower than the 3-year-old car on the page.
These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.
Who pays more, and who pays less
- Pays less: a settled driver with a 50% NCD, in a new or older car.
- Pays a little more: an older driver aged 65.
- Pays a lot more: a driver with no NCD or a small one, or a younger driver.
If the car will be shared in a family, price the case for the driver with the smallest NCD before you commit.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36

- Honda Freed: S$642.42

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Sharan is 1% above it. Three of the six cost less to insure: the Sienta, the Corolla Altis and the Freed. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
