Volkswagen Scirocco in Singapore, the costs of tax, COE and cover

The Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule, and insurance from 14 insurers, including what the low-price plan's excess is.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

For a Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI, insurance is the cost that takes the most care. The lowest premium on its price page comes with a S$2,500 excess. And the spread between insurers runs to 143%. This guide sets those out, together with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.

The version priced

The new-car list has no entry for the Scirocco on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type. The quote form prices the Scirocco 1.4 TSI, with a 1,390cc engine. All figures below are for it.

The COE rule

The price page states that the Scirocco 1.4 TSI, with its 1,390cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. These move each round. The COE page shows the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$619.74 a year for the 1,390cc engine, before any age surcharge.

The surcharge applies to cars more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page covers other engine sizes.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Volkswagen Scirocco price page prices this case:

  • Car: Scirocco 1.4 TSI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 14 insurers price the Scirocco. The lowest premium is S$739.39. The insurer whose lowest plan sits highest asks at least S$1,794.47. That is S$1,055.08 more, or 143% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on our panel have no online price. One has none for this model yet, and the other does not quote the model online.

Read the excess first

The excess is the part of each claim you pay. On this page, the lowest premium carries a S$2,500 excess. Most other plans carry S$600. A few sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800, while two more ask S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has none.

So the lowest premium is not the whole story. If you claim, a plan with a S$600 excess could leave you better off. Weigh the premium you save against the excess you would pay.

How the premium moves

With one detail changed and the rest held, the lowest price becomes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,248.95, S$509.56 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,248.95, S$509.56 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,116.64, S$377.25 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, S$72.32 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$703.95, S$35.44 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$734.03, S$5.36 less

Without an NCD, the lowest price rises 69%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD lands on that same figure. A 20% NCD trims the jump.

An older driver aged 65 pays S$72.32 more, with one fewer insurer quoting. Both a new Scirocco and an 8-year-old one start a little lower than the 3-year-old car on the page.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

Pros

  • Car age does not push the price up: newer and older cars both start lower.
  • Fourteen insurers quote it online, so there is a wide field.

Cons

  • The lowest premium comes with a S$2,500 excess.
  • A driver without a full NCD starts S$509.56 higher.
  • Three of six similar cars cost less to insure.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Scirocco costs about the same. Three of the six are cheaper to insure: the Sienta, the Corolla Altis and the Freed. The Mazda 3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLB cost more. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town.
  • Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
