The Volkswagen Polo SASE has two traits worth knowing on cost. Every plan on its price page carries an excess of S$800 or less. And the insurers' prices for the same driver are far apart. This guide sets out both, with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote for you.
The car we price
The new-car list has no entry for the Polo SASE on sale now, so this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form prices the Polo SASE 1.4, with a 1,390cc engine. All figures below are for it.
The COE rule
The price page states that the Polo SASE 1.4, with its 1,390cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest results.
If the car is already registered, check its COE expiry date. That date limits how long you can keep it without paying to renew.
Road tax
For the 1,390cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$619.74 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge begins once a car passes 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page has other engine sizes.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volkswagen Polo SASE price page prices this case:
- Car: Polo SASE 1.4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver, 13 insurers price the car. The lowest premium is S$604.07. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,794.48. That is S$1,190.41 more, or 197% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Polo SASE yet.
So the gap between insurers is larger than the lowest premium. Comparing is the most direct way to stay near the bottom of that range.
Excess: low on every plan
The excess is the part of each claim you pay yourself. Ten plans here carry S$600. Three sit at S$500, two at S$750 and three at S$800. One plan has no excess. No plan on this page asks more than S$800. With excesses this close, the premium and the cover are what set the plans apart.
The price for other drivers
The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$939.61, S$335.54 more
- 20% NCD: S$939.61, S$335.54 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$939.61, S$335.54 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
- A car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less
Three different drivers share one floor: no NCD, a 20% NCD, and a driver aged 27 with 30%. Each starts 56% above the standard driver. A driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver, though one fewer insurer quotes that case.
And for an older or newer car
Car age moves the lowest price only a little. An 8-year-old Polo SASE costs S$51.16 less to insure than a 3-year-old one. A new one costs S$18.27 more.
These are lowest prices only. Plans further up may move by other amounts.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Polo SASE comes in 18% below that. None of the six is cheaper to insure, and the Toyota Sienta matches it. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
Before you pay a deposit
- Check the papers: the version name and engine size should match the quote you got.
- Check the COE: how many years are left.
- Check the road tax: when it is due, and whether the car is near the 10-year surcharge.
- Get quotes for your own driver: the floor moves a lot with the NCD.
- Ask for the service record: what was done, and when.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town.
- Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
- ERP: your routes and the hours you drive them.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years.
- Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
