Volkswagen Polo in Singapore, the cost of road tax and insurance

What a Volkswagen Polo 1.0 costs to keep in Singapore: S$390.80 road tax, the COE rule and insurance from 15 insurers, dated October 2026.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Volkswagen Polo 1.0 is cheap to tax, with road tax of S$390.80 a year. Its insurance starts at S$586.41 for a settled driver. But the same driver could pay far more at another insurer, and much more again without an NCD. This guide sets out each of those costs, along with the COE and the ones that depend on you.

The insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.

Polo versions on our form

The new-car list has no entry for the Polo on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form lists three versions:

  • Polo 1.0: 999cc
  • Polo 1.2: 1,198cc
  • Polo 1.4 16v: 1,390cc

The figures below are for the 1.0, the version most insurers quote. The 1.2 and 1.4 have larger engines, so they pay more road tax, and their premiums differ.

The COE rule

The price page states that the Polo 1.0, with its 999cc engine, needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. These change each round, and the COE page has the latest.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$390.80 a year for the 999cc engine, before any age surcharge.

The surcharge applies to cars more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On a small base, even the top step is modest in dollars. The road tax page has the 1.2 and 1.4 figures.

Insurance: a wide spread

The Volkswagen Polo price page prices this case:

  • Car: Polo 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver, 15 insurers give a price. Only one on our panel has no online price for the Polo yet. The lowest premium is S$586.41. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,655.40. That is S$1,068.99 more, or 182% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The gap is larger than the lowest premium itself. For a car this cheap to tax, insurance is where the yearly bill can swing the most.

Excess

The excess is your share of each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000, while one plan has none. Read the excess on every quote before you compare premiums.

How the premium moves

The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,101.73, S$515.32 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,101.73, S$515.32 more
  • 20% NCD: S$946.41, S$360.00 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$586.41, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$596.81, S$10.40 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$545.00, S$41.41 less

With no NCD, the lowest price rises 88%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays the same figure. A 20% NCD sits between them.

The car's age matters far less. A new Polo costs S$10.40 more at the lowest price, and an 8-year-old one S$41.41 less. An older driver pays the same as the standard driver.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Your NCD in dollars

A full 50% NCD on this car is worth S$515.32 a year at the lowest price. That is more than the road tax. If you claim, you may lose part of it. Some plans let you protect it for an extra charge, so ask what that costs.

Against similar small cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:

Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Polo is 11% below it. One of the six costs less to insure: the Chery QQ. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.

Who it suits on cost

  • A settled driver with a full NCD: low road tax and a low insurance floor.
  • A buyer looking at an older Polo: an 8-year-old car is a little cheaper to insure.
  • A household with a younger driver: the floor rises sharply, so price that case first.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere.
  • Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you use them.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Polo 1.0 (999cc):

  • Road tax: S$390.80 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$586.41 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,101.73
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$545.00

For reference, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
