Here is what you will pay to insure a Volkswagen Polo GTI, and what else it costs to keep one. The headline is the spread. For the same driver and car, the highest of the insurers' lowest plans is 197% above the lowest premium. Below, each cost is set out with what changes it.
All insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your answers.
The version priced
The new-car list has no entry for the Polo GTI on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. The quote form prices the Polo GTI 1.4, with a 1,390cc engine. Every figure below is for it.
COE
The price page states the rule for the Polo GTI 1.4, with its 1,390cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if its power is more.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. The COE page has the latest. If the car is already registered, ask for the date its COE ends.
Road tax
For a 1,390cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$619.74 a year, before any age surcharge.
Cars more than 10 years old pay a surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page covers other engine sizes.
Here is what you will pay to insure it
The Volkswagen Polo GTI price page prices this case:
- Car: Polo GTI 1.4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver:
- Insurers that price it: 14
- Lowest premium: S$604.07
- Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$1,794.48
- Gap: S$1,190.41, or 197% more
All prices include 9% GST. Two insurers on our panel have no online price for the Polo GTI yet.
The gap is larger than the lowest premium itself. That is a strong reason to get several quotes.
Excess
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none. Read it alongside every premium.
How the premium moves
The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,122.74, S$518.67 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,122.74, S$518.67 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,017.37, S$413.30 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
- A car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less
Without an NCD, the lowest price rises 86%. A driver aged 27 with 30% NCD pays exactly the same. A 20% NCD only trims the jump.
An older driver pays the same as the standard driver, with one fewer insurer quoting. A new car costs S$18.27 more to insure at the lowest price, and an 8-year-old one S$51.16 less.
These are lowest prices only. With insurers this far apart, dearer plans may react in very different ways.
Pros and cons on insurance cost
Pros
- For the standard driver, the lowest price is below all six similar cars on the page.
- An older driver pays no more at the lowest price.
- Car age moves the price only a little.
Cons
- A driver without a full NCD starts S$518.67 higher.
- A young driver aged 27 starts at the same higher figure.
- Some plans ask an excess of S$2,500 or more.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07

What to check on a plan
- Excess: for the main driver, and for any young named driver.
- Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop.
- NCD protection: whether it is offered, and what it adds.
- Modifications: tell the insurer about any change to the car, since it can affect cover.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and the times you drive them.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
- Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later in its COE life.
