The Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0 shows a very sharp NCD effect on its price page. A driver with no NCD pays 130% more than the standard driver at the lowest price. So for this car, who drives it matters as much as which insurer you use. This guide covers both, along with the COE, road tax and the costs that depend on you.
The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own quote depends on your details.
The car we price
The new-car list has no entry for the Passat Variant on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Our quote form lists it as the Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0, with a 1,983cc engine. All figures below are for it.
COE
The price page states that this car, with its 1,983cc engine, is above 1,600cc and needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
The COE page shows the latest round. If the car is registered, check how long its COE has left.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$1,192.16 a year for the 1,983cc engine, before any age surcharge.
After 10 years, a surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page covers other engine sizes.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volkswagen Passat Variant price page prices this case:
- Car: Passat Variant 2.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver:
- Insurers that price it: 10
- Lowest premium: S$764.82
- Highest of the insurers' lowest plans: S$2,209.84
- Gap: S$1,445.02, or 189% more
All prices include 9% GST. Six insurers on our panel have no online price. Five have none for this model yet, and one does not list the model on its online quote.
Excess
The excess is what you pay on each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. One sits at S$500 and one asks S$2,500. One plan has no excess. So most plans share the same excess, and the premium is the main difference between them.
The NCD effect
The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,760.15, S$995.33 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,446.39, S$681.57 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,288.12, S$523.30 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$764.82, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$787.96, S$23.14 more
- A car 8 years old: S$700.28, S$64.54 less
With no NCD, the lowest price is 130% higher than the standard driver's. That rise of S$995.33 is larger than the standard driver's whole lowest premium. A driver with 20% NCD pays S$523.30 more. A driver aged 27 with 30% pays S$681.57 more.
The other lines barely move. An older driver aged 65 pays the same, with only nine insurers quoting. A new car costs S$23.14 more, and an 8-year-old one S$64.54 less.
These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move by other amounts.
Protecting the NCD
A full 50% NCD is worth a great deal on this car. If you claim, you may lose part of it. Some plans offer NCD protection for an extra charge. Ask what it costs, and which claims it covers, before you buy.
If a newer driver will use the car
Price that exact case before you commit. On this car, the gap between a full NCD and a small one is wide enough to change the yearly budget.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
- Lexus RX: S$972.39
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Toyota Voxy: S$793.75
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
Their average lowest price is S$867.25. The Passat Variant comes in 12% below it. One of the six is cheaper to insure: the Toyota Harrier. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
What to check on a plan
- Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop.
- Excess: the figure for the main driver and for any younger named driver.
- NCD terms: how much of the NCD a single claim would cost you.
- Who may drive: named drivers, and any charge for adding them.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
- Fuel: your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and the hours you drive them.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record.
