Our quote form lists eleven versions of the Volkswagen Passat, with engines from 1,390cc to 3,597cc. That spread matters, because engine size sets road tax and shapes insurance. This guide works through the costs for the Passat 1.8, the version most insurers quote. It covers the COE, road tax, insurance and the costs that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. They are not a quote.
Passat versions on the quote form
The new-car list has no entry for the Passat on sale now, so this guide gives no list price, power or body type. The quote form lists:
- Passat 1.4 TSI: 1,390cc
- Passat 1.8: 1,798cc
- Passat 1.8 SASE (Non-Turbo): 1,781cc
- Passat 1.8 Turbo: 1,781cc
- Passat 1.8 Wagon (Non-Turbo): 1,781cc
- Passat Variant 1.8 Turbo: 1,781cc
- Passat 2.0 (Non-Turbo): 1,982cc
- Passat 2.0 Turbo: 1,984cc
- Passat 2.0 Wagon Turbo: 2,000cc
- Passat 1.4 TDI BlueMotion SASE: 2,000cc
- Passat 3.6: 3,597cc
All figures below are for the Passat 1.8 (1,798cc). If yours is another version, quote it by that name.
COE
The price page states that the Passat 1.8, with its 1,798cc engine, is above 1,600cc and needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
That figure moves each round, and the COE page has the latest. On a registered car, check the COE's end date before you agree a price.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$975.16 a year for the 1,798cc engine, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge applies after 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The other Passat versions pay different road tax, according to their engine size. Look each one up on the road tax page.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Volkswagen Passat price page prices this case:
- Car: Passat 1.8, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver, 15 insurers give a price, and only one on our panel has no online price yet. The lowest premium is S$819.82. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$2,077.81. That is S$1,257.99 more, or 153% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
The difference between insurers is bigger than the lowest premium. On this car, comparing quotes can make a large difference to what you pay.
The excess
The excess is what you pay towards each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has none. The lowest premium on this page comes with a S$2,500 excess. So set the excess beside every premium before you choose.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one change and the rest held:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,208.59, S$388.77 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,208.59, S$388.77 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,208.59, S$388.77 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$861.03, S$41.21 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$786.83, S$32.99 less
- A car 8 years old: S$787.96, S$31.86 less
Losing the NCD costs the most, at 47% on the lowest price. A driver with 20% NCD and a driver aged 27 pay the same.
An older driver pays a little more, by S$41.21. Car age works the other way here: both a new Passat and an 8-year-old one start lower than the 3-year-old car on the page.
These are lowest prices only. Plans higher up may move by other amounts, and fewer insurers quote some cases.

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists:
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42

Their average lowest price is S$741.89. The Passat is 11% above it. Four of the six cost less to insure: the Harrier, the Kona, the Corolla Altis and the Avante. The E-Class and the 5 Series cost more. Other Volkswagens are on the Volkswagen car insurance page.
