The Skoda Roomster's ownership and insurance costs in Singapore

A cost-by-cost look at the Skoda Roomster in Singapore: COE rule, road tax and dated car insurance prices for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

You will mostly meet the Skoda Roomster on the used market, since it is not on the new-car list. If you are weighing one up, this page lays out the bills we can put figures on. It covers the COE rule, road tax and car insurance.

The insurance figures are examples for a single stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own quote will depend on your details. Use these to see how costs compare, not as a price.

The version we priced

With no new-car list entry, there is no list price, power figure or body type to report. Our quote form prices the Roomster 1.6, with a 1,596cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.

The COE question

The Roomster 1.6 has a 1,596cc engine. For that size, its category depends on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. Each round sets a new price. The COE page keeps the latest results.

For a used Roomster, the COE is part of what you pay the seller. The years left on it matter more than the original premium.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives S$740.56 a year for a 1,596cc engine, before any surcharge for age.

An older Roomster may already pay the surcharge. It applies to cars over 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Use the road tax page for other engine sizes.

Car insurance, one standard case

On the Skoda Roomster price page, every insurer prices the same case:

  • Car: Roomster 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use
  • Cover: comprehensive, with authorised workshop repairs and no options
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years' driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims

10 insurers price that case. The lowest premium is S$642.42 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,384.65. That is S$742.23 more, or 116% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

So two quotes for the same driver can differ by more than double. Shopping around is where most of the saving lies.

Six other insurers have no online price for this model yet. That still leaves ten to compare, which is plenty for a car of this age. Some insurers list more than one plan, so the page shows more prices than insurers. Compare the cover each plan gives, not just its place in the list.

Excess: the other number

Each plan carries an excess, the amount you pay on a claim before the insurer pays. Most plans here carry S$600. The range runs from S$0 up to S$3,000. Two plans priced close together can differ a lot here. Read the excess column next to the premium.

Prices marked as estimates come from an insurer's rate table rather than a live quote.

When one detail changes

The price page reruns the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$970.88, S$328.46 more
  • 20% NCD: S$970.88, S$328.46 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$970.88, S$328.46 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$642.42, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$660.69, S$18.27 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$586.41, S$56.01 less

The NCD matters most. With none, the lowest price rises by 51%. A 20% NCD and a young driver both land on the same higher figure.

The older driver pays the same as the standard one. And an older car is cheaper to insure at this lowest price, which suits a model now bought mostly used.

These are lowest prices. Dearer plans may change by other amounts.

Similar cars, side by side

The price page compares six cars with similar engine sizes. Each is priced for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93, and the Roomster is 11% below it. Only one of the six, the Toyota Sienta, is cheaper to insure.

More Skoda models are on the Skoda car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks cars across makes.

Owner-dependent costs

Some costs depend on how you use the car, so we give no figures:

  • Parking: your season parking, at home and at work, plus short stays in town.
  • Petrol: set by distance and pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and timing.
  • Maintenance: servicing on schedule, and parts such as tyres, brakes and batteries. Ask for the service record on a used car.
  • Depreciation: what you lose between buying and selling, or until the COE ends.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Roomster 1.6, dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$740.56 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$642.42 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$970.88
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$586.41

For reference, the COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
