Peugeot 408 ownership costs in Singapore, road tax to insurance

The Peugeot 408 in Singapore: the version on the new-car list, its COE rule, road tax and car insurance prices for one driver on 20 October 2026.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Peugeot 408 is one of the Peugeots still on the new-car list in Singapore. If you are weighing one up, the yearly bills matter as much as the price on the showroom floor. This page sets out what the facts let us show: the version on sale, the COE, road tax and car insurance.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own premium depends on your details, so treat them as a guide.

What is on sale

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has one version of the 408, an SUV made in France:

  • 408 1.2 EAT8 GT Fastback: petrol, 1,199cc, 129bhp

The list did not show a price for it that day, so this page gives none. Ask for a full price breakdown when you visit a showroom.

Our quote form carries two versions:

  • 408 1.2: 1,199cc
  • 408 1.6: 1,587cc

The insurance figures below are for the 1.2, the version most of our insurers quote. The 1.6 is an older version with a larger engine, so it pays more road tax.

The COE

For the 408 1.2, with a 1,199cc engine, the COE category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It closed at S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round.
  • Category B: if its power is more. It closed at S$130,100 in the same round.

Each bidding round resets these figures. Ask the dealer which category the car you are offered is registered under. The COE page shows the latest results.

Road tax

The 1,199cc engine pays S$507.72 a year under LTA's formula, before any age surcharge. The road tax page has the figure for the 1.6's 1,587cc engine.

Once a car is more than 10 years old, a surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Insuring the 408

The Peugeot 408 price page quotes one profile:

  • Car: 408 1.2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons

The spread

12 insurers price this car online. The lowest premium is S$909.50 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,386.67. That is S$477.17 more, or 52% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The spread is fairly narrow, but the lowest price itself is higher than for most of the similar cars below. Four insurers on our panel have no online price for the 408. The price page gives each reason.

The excess

Most plans carry a S$600 excess. Some carry S$500 or S$800, a few carry S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has none. Read the excess with the premium. A cheaper plan with a higher excess can cost more if you need to claim.

How the price changes

The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,258.78, S$349.28 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,227.87, S$318.37 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,258.78, S$349.28 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$909.50, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$909.50, the same
  • A car 8 years old: S$869.42, S$40.08 less

The largest jump comes from losing your NCD: 38% more on the lowest price. A younger driver with less experience lands on the same figure. A new 408 costs the same to insure at the lowest price as a 3-year-old one, which is worth knowing if you are buying from the showroom.

For the driver aged 65 and for the new car, 11 insurers give a price against 12 for the standard profile. These lines show lowest prices only; other plans can move differently.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

Their average lowest price is S$688.21. The 408, at S$909.50, is 32% above that. All six cost less to insure for this driver. If insurance is a large part of your budget, it is worth pricing a rival alongside. Other Peugeots are on the Peugeot car insurance page.

Costs that depend on you

Some costs vary too much between owners for a single figure:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out. Check your own block's rate.
  • Petrol: depends on your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
  • Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what the warranty covers and whether a service package comes with the car.
  • Depreciation: depends on what you pay and what the car fetches when you sell.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Peugeot 408 1.2, dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$507.72 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$909.50 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, a new car: from S$909.50
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,258.78

The one-off cost of a new car's COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
