Opel Zafira in Singapore, what you pay in road tax and insurance

The Opel Zafira 1.8 in Singapore: Category B COE, yearly road tax and dated car insurance prices from 15 insurers for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Opel Zafira 1.8 has an engine just over 1,600cc, so it falls in COE Category B and pays road tax to match. Its insurance is priced by most of the panel, which gives you a wide field to compare. This guide sets out the figures.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not your quote.

Zafira versions

Our quote form lists three:

  • Zafira 1.8: 1,796cc
  • Zafira 1.8 MTA (A): 1,796cc
  • Zafira 2.2: 2,198cc

The price page prices the Zafira 1.8, the version most insurers quote. The new-car list read for this guide has no Zafira on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type.

COE

The Zafira 1.8's 1,796cc engine is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

On a used Zafira, the COE is already attached and runs until it expires. Check the expiry date before you agree a price, since it sets how long you can keep the car. The COE page shows recent results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,796cc engine S$972.80 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19. Both 1.8 versions share this figure.

The surcharge for older cars:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 2.2 has a bigger engine and a higher base. The road tax page has its figure.

Here's what insurance costs

The Opel Zafira price page prices this case:

  • Car: Zafira 1.8, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price it, across 23 plans. The lowest premium is S$787.96, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,451.27. That is S$663.31 more, or 84% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Only one insurer on the panel has no online price for the Zafira. With 15 to choose from and a wide gap between them, getting several quotes is the simplest way to see where your own price falls.

Excess

Ten of the 23 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none.

The second-lowest premium, S$951.11, carries an S$2,500 excess. The third, S$956.90, carries S$600, only a few dollars more. Four plans are estimates, so their price may change once your details are in.

How the price changes

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,154.84, S$366.88 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$366.88 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,154.84, S$366.88 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$787.96, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$811.71, S$23.75 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less
  1. NCD: with none, the lowest price is 47% higher. It is the largest change shown.
  2. Young driver: aged 27 with 30% NCD, the lowest price matches the no-NCD figure.
  3. Older driver: aged 65 with a long record, the lowest price holds, with one fewer insurer quoting.
  4. Car age: an 8-year-old Zafira is cheaper to insure at the lowest price than a 3-year-old one.

These are lowest prices only; other plans can move by different amounts.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$741.89. The Zafira is 6% above it. Four of the six cost less to insure, and two, the E-Class and the 5 Series, cost more. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: nearly the whole panel prices it
  • For: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price
  • Against: four of six similar cars cost less to insure
  • Against: losing your NCD adds S$366.88 at the lowest price

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and times
  • Servicing and parts: ask for the service record and what has been replaced
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Checks before you buy

  • COE expiry date: and the years left
  • Registration date: it decides the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what is due next
  • Your own quotes: with your NCD and the main driver's age
