Opel Grandland X in Singapore, what road tax and insurance cost

The Opel Grandland X 1.2 in Singapore: road tax, COE category and dated car insurance prices, where no NCD almost doubles the lowest premium.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Opel Grandland X 1.2 has a small engine for its name, which keeps its road tax low. Its insurance shows a familiar pattern: a low lowest premium for an experienced driver, and close to double that without a no-claim discount. This guide sets out the figures, with the COE category.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to compare, not as your quote.

The version priced

Our quote form prices the Grandland X 1.2, with a 1,199cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one this guide covers.

The new-car list read for this guide has no Grandland X on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.

COE

For the Grandland X 1.2, with its 1,199cc engine, the COE category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest. A used car keeps its COE until it expires, so check the date.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,199cc engine S$507.72 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

The surcharge for older cars:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula.

Car insurance for the standard driver

The Opel Grandland X price page prices this case:

  • Car: Grandland X 1.2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

13 insurers price it, across 20 plans. The lowest premium is S$604.07, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,195.58. That is S$591.51 more, or 98% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Three insurers on the panel have no online price for the Grandland X.

Excess

Ten of the 20 plans carry an S$600 excess. Two carry S$500 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none.

The lowest plan stands alone. The next, S$859.50, carries an S$2,500 excess. The one after, S$893.39, carries S$600. Three plans are estimates, which can change once your details are in.

How the price changes

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,195.58, S$591.51 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,017.37, S$413.30 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,136.39, S$532.32 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$604.07, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less

No NCD: the lowest price is 98% higher, close to double. It matches what the dearest insurer's lowest plan asks of the standard driver.

20% NCD: still S$413.30 above the standard figure.

A 27-year-old with 30% NCD: S$1,136.39.

An older driver: pays the same, with one fewer insurer quoting.

Car age: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price, and a new one slightly more.

These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move differently.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$688.21. The Grandland X is 12% below it. Two of the six, the C-HR and the Qashqai, cost less to insure. The three Mercedes-Benz models cost noticeably more. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: below the average of six similar cars
  • For: no rise for an older main driver at the lowest price
  • Against: the lowest price close to doubles with no NCD
  • Against: a big step from the lowest plan to the next

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and travel times
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule; on a used car, ask for the record
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you buy

  • COE expiry date: and the years left
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been replaced and what is due
  • Quotes with your own NCD and age: they move this car's price far more than its age does
