The Opel Astra has been sold in Singapore with many engines, from a 1.0 up to a 1.8. The 1.0 is the one most insurers quote, and its yearly costs are low on road tax. Insurance is low too for an experienced driver, but it climbs steeply without a no-claim discount. This guide sets out the figures.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not your quote.
Astra versions on our form
The new-car list read for this guide has no Astra on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Our quote form lists six versions:
- Astra 1.0: 999cc
- Astra 1.3 CDTi Caravan: 1,248cc
- Astra 1.4: 1,398cc
- Astra 1.6: 1,598cc
- Astra 1.8: 1,796cc
- Astra 1.8 SPRT: 1,795cc
The price page prices the Astra 1.0. All figures below are for that car.
COE
For the Astra 1.0, with its 999cc engine, the category depends on power:
- Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
- Category B: if it is more
Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. A used Astra keeps its COE until it expires. The COE page has the latest.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 999cc engine S$390.80 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.
The surcharge for older cars:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The larger Astra engines pay more, and road tax rules also differ by fuel type. Check your exact car on the road tax page.
Car insurance for the standard driver
The Opel Astra price page prices this case:
- Car: Astra 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price it, across 23 plans. The lowest premium is S$545.00, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,275.90. That is S$730.90 more, or 134% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Only one insurer on the panel has no online price for the Astra.
Excess
Ten of the 23 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none.
The second-lowest premium, S$691.57, carries an S$2,500 excess. Four plans are estimates, so their final price can change once your details are in.
NCD and other changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,117.23, S$572.23 more
- 20% NCD: S$903.53, S$358.53 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,010.22, S$465.22 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$545.00, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$552.91, S$7.91 more
- Car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same
No NCD: the lowest price is 105% higher, more than double. This is the line to note.
20% NCD: still S$358.53 above the standard driver.
A 27-year-old with 30% NCD: S$1,010.22.
Older driver and car age: make little or no difference at the lowest price. A 65-year-old pays the same, with one fewer insurer quoting. A new car costs S$7.91 more, and an 8-year-old one the same.
These are lowest prices only; other plans may move differently.
Against similar small cars
The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:
- Audi A1: S$660.69
- Audi Q2: S$660.69
- Chery A1: S$774.43
- Chery QQ: S$545.00
- Citroen C3: S$604.07
- Daihatsu Copen: S$718.87
Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Astra 1.0 is 18% below it, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Chery QQ matches it. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.
Pros and cons on insurance cost
- For: no similar car on the page is cheaper to insure
- For: car age barely moves the lowest price
- Against: the lowest price more than doubles with no NCD
- Against: a wide spread between insurers
Costs that depend on you
These vary from owner to owner:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
- Fuel: your mileage and the pump price
- ERP: your routes and times
- Servicing: the maker's schedule; ask for the record on a used car
- Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left
Before you buy
- Which version it is: engine size sets the road tax
- COE expiry date: and the years left
- Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
- Quotes with your own NCD: since it moves this car's price so much
