Opel Astra-H in Singapore, what it costs to tax and insure a 1.6

The Opel Astra-H 1.6 (A) in Singapore: road tax, COE category and dated insurance prices, where the lowest premium carries a high excess.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Opel Astra-H is not on the new-car list, so you will meet it on the used market. Its insurance has a few quirks worth knowing before you buy. The lowest premium comes with a high excess, and older drivers pay more. This guide sets out those figures with road tax and the COE.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show how the market prices the car, not your quote.

The Astra-H on our form

Our quote form prices the Astra-H 1.6 (A), with a 1,598cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one here.

The new-car list read for this guide has no Astra-H on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type.

COE category

For the Astra-H 1.6 (A), with its 1,598cc engine, the category depends on power:

  • Category A: if power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round.
  • Category B: if power is more. S$130,100 in the same round.

A used car carries its existing COE. Check how many years it has left. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,598cc engine S$741.72 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

Older cars pay a surcharge on top:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula.

Insurance for the standard driver

The Opel Astra-H price page prices this case:

  • Car: Astra-H 1.6 (A), registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

12 insurers price it, across 18 plans. The lowest premium is S$864.75. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,307.60. That is S$442.85 more, or 51% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Four insurers on the panel have no online price for the Astra-H. That leaves a dozen to compare, and a narrower gap between them than many cars show.

The excess changes the picture

The lowest premium, S$864.75, is the plan with an S$2,500 excess. The next, S$882.99, carries S$600. So for a few dollars more, the second plan asks far less of you on a claim.

Across all 18 plans, nine carry S$600. Two carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. One carries none. Four plans are estimates, so their price may change once your details are in.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,232.11, S$367.36 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,232.11, S$367.36 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,232.11, S$367.36 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$964.93, S$100.18 more
  • New car, registered this year: S$830.65, S$34.10 less
  • Car 8 years old: S$840.47, S$24.28 less

NCD: with none, the lowest price is 42% higher.

Older driver: a 65-year-old pays S$100.18 more at the lowest price, and one fewer insurer quotes. Many cars show no change here, so this one stands out.

Car age: both a new car and an 8-year-old one cost less than the 3-year-old car at the lowest price. That is unusual, and a reason to price your own car at its real age.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move differently.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The Astra-H is 19% above it. Five of the six cost less to insure. Only the Mazda 3 costs more. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: a narrow spread between insurers
  • For: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price
  • Against: the lowest premium carries an S$2,500 excess
  • Against: five of six similar cars cost less to insure, and older drivers pay more

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and travel times
  • Servicing and parts: ask for the record and what has been replaced
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you pay a deposit

  • COE expiry date: on the papers
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been done
  • Your own quotes: especially if the main driver is older, and with the excess you can afford in mind
