Opel Mokka X in Singapore, the real cost of road tax and insurance

The Opel Mokka X 1.6 in Singapore: road tax, COE category and dated insurance prices, with a high excess on the lowest plan and more for older drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

At first glance, the Opel Mokka X 1.6 has a fair lowest insurance premium. Look closer and three things stand out. The lowest plan carries a high excess, older drivers pay a good deal more, and most similar cars cost less to insure. This guide sets out the numbers, along with road tax and the COE category.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not your quote.

The Mokka X we price

Our quote form prices the Mokka X 1.6, with a 1,598cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one this guide covers.

The new-car list read for this guide has no Mokka X on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Any you buy will be used.

COE

For the Mokka X 1.6, with its 1,598cc engine, the category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car, the COE stays with the car until it expires. The COE page has the latest.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,598cc engine S$741.72 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

The surcharge for older cars:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula.

Car insurance for the standard driver

The Opel Mokka X price page prices this case:

  • Car: Mokka X 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

12 insurers price it, across 17 plans. The lowest premium is S$865.31. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,499.13. That is S$633.82 more, or 73% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Four insurers on the panel have no online price for the Mokka X.

The excess on the lowest plan

The lowest premium, S$865.31, is the plan with an S$2,500 excess. The next three, at S$1,008.99, S$1,019.83 and S$1,036.56, each carry S$600. So the low headline price comes with a much bigger bill if you ever claim.

Across all 17 plans, nine carry S$600. Three carry S$500 and three S$800. One carries S$2,500 and one none. Four plans are estimates, so their final price can change.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,168.36, S$303.05 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,168.36, S$303.05 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,168.36, S$303.05 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$1,021.72, S$156.41 more
  • New car, registered this year: S$836.73, S$28.58 less
  • Car 8 years old: S$831.29, S$34.02 less

NCD: with none, the lowest price is 35% higher, the biggest change on the page.

Older driver: a 65-year-old pays S$156.41 more at the lowest price, and one fewer insurer quotes. If an older family member will be the main driver, price the policy in their name.

Car age: both a new car and an 8-year-old one cost less than the 3-year-old car at the lowest price. That is unusual, so price your own car at its real age.

These are lowest prices only.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The Mokka X is 19% above it. Five of the six cost less to insure; only the Mazda 3 costs more. If you are choosing between these cars, insurance is one cost where the Mokka X sits towards the top. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: losing your NCD adds less here than for many cars
  • For: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price
  • Against: the lowest premium carries an S$2,500 excess
  • Against: older drivers pay more, and five of six similar cars cost less to insure

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and travel times
  • Servicing and parts: ask for the service record and what has been replaced
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you buy

  • COE expiry date: and the years left on it
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been done and what is due
  • Quotes for the real main driver: with the excess you can afford in mind
