An Opel Meriva is a used-market car in Singapore now. If you are thinking of one, its yearly road tax and insurance are the costs you can plan around. For an experienced driver, its lowest premium sits below most similar cars. This guide sets out the figures, with the COE category.
All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show where the market sits, not your quote.
Meriva versions
Our quote form lists two:
- Meriva 1.4: 1,398cc
- Meriva 1.6: 1,598cc
The price page prices the Meriva 1.4, the version most insurers quote. The new-car list read for this guide has no Meriva on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.
COE
For the Meriva 1.4, with its 1,398cc engine, the category depends on power:
- Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
- Category B: if it is more
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest. On a used Meriva, the COE goes with the car until it expires.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,398cc engine S$624.42 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.
Older cars pay a surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The Meriva 1.6 has a larger engine and pays more. The road tax page has its figure.
What insurance costs
The Opel Meriva price page prices this case:
- Car: Meriva 1.4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
14 insurers price it, across 22 plans. The lowest premium is S$642.42, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,210.20. That is S$567.78 more, or 88% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Two insurers on the panel have no online price for the Meriva. The other 14 give a wide range, so getting several quotes is the simplest way to see where your own price falls.
Excess
Ten of the 22 plans carry an S$600 excess. Two carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none.
The second-lowest premium, S$815.83, carries an S$2,500 excess. The third, S$911.35, carries S$600. Three plans are estimates. Check the excess on any plan you shortlist.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,065.51, S$423.09 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,065.51, S$423.09 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,065.51, S$423.09 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$642.42, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$660.69, S$18.27 more
- Car 8 years old: S$586.41, S$56.01 less
The NCD is what moves this price. With none, the lowest price is 66% higher. A 27-year-old with 30% NCD pays the same figure.
For an older driver with a long record, the lowest price stays put, though one fewer insurer quotes. For an older car, it drops. A Meriva on the used market is likely to sit nearer the 8-year-old line than the new one.
These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move differently.
Against similar cars
The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Meriva is 13% below it. Only one of the six, the Sienta, is cheaper to insure. The Corolla Altis and the Freed match it exactly. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.
