Opel Insignia Grandsport in Singapore and its yearly running costs

The Opel Insignia Grandsport in Singapore: road tax on its 1,490cc engine, COE category and dated car insurance prices for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

If an Opel Insignia Grandsport is on your shortlist, it will be a used car: the new-car list has no entry for it. This guide covers the yearly costs you can plan for. Those are road tax and car insurance, along with the COE category.

All insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show where the market sits. Your own quote depends on your details.

The Grandsport we price

Our quote form prices the Insignia Grandsport with a 1,490cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one here. With no new-car list entry, this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Which COE category

The Grandsport's 1,490cc engine puts the category down to power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car, the COE goes with the car until it expires. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,490cc engine S$678.38 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

The surcharge for cars more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula.

Here's what insurance costs

The Opel Insignia Grandsport price page prices this case:

  • Car: Insignia Grandsport, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

13 insurers price it, across 18 plans. The lowest premium is S$764.82, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,499.13. That is S$734.31 more, or 96% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Put simply, one insurer's lowest plan costs nearly twice another's for the same car and driver. Three insurers on the panel have no online price for the Grandsport. The other 13 still give you a wide spread, and the gap is large enough to make several quotes worth the time.

Excess

Ten of the 18 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500 and three S$800. One carries S$2,500 and one none.

That S$2,500 plan is the second-lowest premium, at S$810.59. The plans that follow, at S$921.93 and S$959.78, both carry S$600. Four plans are estimates, so their price may change once your details are in.

How the lowest price shifts

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,212.45, S$447.63 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,212.45, S$447.63 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,212.45, S$447.63 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$764.82, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$779.63, S$14.81 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$700.28, S$64.54 less

NCD: losing it lifts the lowest price by 59%, the biggest change shown.

Young driver: at 27 with 30% NCD, the lowest price equals the no-NCD figure.

Older driver: at 65 with a long record, no change, with one fewer insurer quoting.

Car age: an 8-year-old Grandsport is cheaper to insure at the lowest price than a 3-year-old one.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans may move differently.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Grandsport is 4% above it. Three of the six cost less to insure, and three cost more. The two Toyotas and the Honda are the cheaper ones. Other Opel models are on the Opel car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price
  • For: no rise for an older main driver at the lowest price
  • Against: three of six similar cars cost less to insure
  • Against: losing your NCD adds S$447.63 at the lowest price

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive
  • Servicing and parts: ask for the service record and what has been replaced
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you pay a deposit

  • COE expiry date: check it on the papers
  • Registration date: it decides the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been done and what is due
  • Your own quotes: with your NCD and the main driver's age
