The Nissan Pulsar 1.2 has a small engine, low road tax and, for an experienced driver, a low lowest premium. The catch is how much the price rises if you have no no-claim discount. This guide sets out the figures, with the COE category.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show how the market prices the car. Your own price depends on your details.
Two Pulsar versions
Our quote form lists:
- Pulsar 1.2L DIG-T: 1,197cc
- Pulsar 1.6: 1,594cc
The price page prices the Pulsar 1.2L DIG-T, the version most insurers quote. The new-car list read for this guide has no Pulsar on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.
COE
For the Pulsar 1.2L DIG-T, with its 1,197cc engine, the COE category depends on power:
- Category A: 97kW (130bhp) or less. S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round.
- Category B: more than that. S$130,100 in the same round.
A used Pulsar keeps its COE until it expires. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,197cc engine S$506.54 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.
The surcharge for older cars:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The Pulsar 1.6 has a bigger engine and pays more. The road tax page has its figure.
Here's what insurance costs
The Nissan Pulsar price page prices this case:
- Car: Pulsar 1.2L DIG-T, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price it, across 25 plans. The lowest premium is S$545.00, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,422.42. That is S$877.42 more, or 161% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
That is a wide spread. Only one insurer on the panel has no online price for the Pulsar, so you have plenty of quotes to set side by side.
Excess
Twelve of the 25 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none.
The second-lowest premium, S$700.26, carries an S$2,500 excess. The third, S$710.76, carries S$500. So two plans a few dollars apart differ a great deal in what you pay on a claim. Four plans are estimates.
The NCD makes the biggest difference
The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,033.41, S$488.41 more
- 20% NCD: S$903.53, S$358.53 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,010.22, S$465.22 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$545.00, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$552.91, S$7.91 more
- Car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same
With no NCD, the lowest price is 90% higher. That is close to double. A 20% NCD still leaves you S$358.53 above the standard driver. A 27-year-old with 30% NCD pays S$1,010.22.
So the headline S$545.00 is a figure for an experienced driver with a full NCD. If you are building your NCD, expect a much higher figure.
Age has little effect at the lowest price. A 65-year-old pays the same, though one fewer insurer quotes. A new car costs S$7.91 more. An 8-year-old one costs the same as a 3-year-old one.
These are lowest prices only.
Against similar cars
The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Jazz / Fit: S$622.34
- Toyota C-HR: S$552.91
- Mercedes-Benz A-Class: S$787.96
- Mercedes-Benz GLA: S$787.96
- Mitsubishi Attrage: S$622.34
Their average lowest price is S$693.58. The Pulsar is 21% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. Other Nissan models are on the Nissan car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.
Pros and cons on insurance cost
- For: below all six similar cars at the lowest price
- For: car age barely moves the lowest price
- Against: the lowest price nearly doubles with no NCD
- Against: a very wide spread between insurers
Costs that depend on you
These vary by owner:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
- ERP: your routes and times
- Servicing: the maker's schedule; ask for the record on a used car
- Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left
Before you buy
- COE expiry date and years left
- Registration date, which sets the road tax surcharge band
- Service history
- Quotes with your own NCD, since this car's price is so sensitive to it
