Nissan Elgrand in Singapore, road tax, COE and what insurance costs

The Nissan Elgrand 2.5 Highway Star in Singapore: Category B COE, S$1,784.52 road tax base and dated car insurance prices for different drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Elgrand is a big car with a big engine, and its yearly costs follow from that. If you are looking at one for a large household, this guide sets out what the facts can price. That means road tax, the COE category and car insurance for several kinds of driver.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own price depends on your details.

Elgrand versions on the form

Our quote form lists two:

  • Elgrand 2.5 Highway Star: 2,488cc
  • Elgrand 350 Rider 3.5: 3,498cc

The price page prices the Elgrand 2.5 Highway Star, the version most insurers quote. The new-car list read for this guide has no Elgrand on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here.

COE: Category B

The Elgrand 2.5 Highway Star has a 2,488cc engine, above 1,600cc. That needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

A used Elgrand comes with its COE. Check how many years are left, since that shapes what the car is worth to you. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 2,488cc engine S$1,784.52 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

The surcharge on older cars:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 3.5 version has a much larger engine and pays considerably more. The road tax page gives its figure.

Car insurance for the standard driver

The Nissan Elgrand price page prices this case:

  • Car: Elgrand 2.5 Highway Star, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price the case, across 25 plans. The lowest premium is S$742.90, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,736.10. That is S$993.20 more, or 134% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Only one insurer on the panel has no online price for the Elgrand. So you can compare almost the whole panel, and with a gap this wide, it is worth doing.

The excess on each plan

Twelve of the 25 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500, one S$3,000 and one none at all.

The second-lowest premium, S$971.89, comes with an S$2,500 excess. Four plans are estimates, which can change once the insurer has your details. When two plans look close, the excess often decides which is the better fit.

How the lowest price moves

With one detail changed, the price page shows:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,164.96, S$422.06 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,164.96, S$422.06 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,164.96, S$422.06 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$742.90, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

NCD: losing it adds 57% to the lowest price, the biggest change on the page.

A younger second driver: if the main driver is 27 with 30% NCD, the lowest price matches the no-NCD figure.

An older main driver: a 65-year-old with a long record pays the same, though one fewer insurer quotes.

Car age: an 8-year-old Elgrand is cheaper to insure at the lowest price.

These are lowest prices only; dearer plans can move differently.

How it compares with similar cars

The price page sets six cars with engines of a similar size beside the Elgrand, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$892.30. The Elgrand is 17% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Alphard and the Vellfire come closest. Other Nissan models are on the Nissan car insurance page.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: below all six similar cars at the lowest price
  • For: nearly the full panel prices it
  • Against: road tax of S$1,784.52 a year before any surcharge
  • Against: losing your NCD adds S$422.06 at the lowest price

Costs that depend on you

These vary too much for one figure:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and the times you drive
  • Servicing: tyres, brakes and battery over the years; ask for the record on a used car
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Checks before you buy

  • COE expiry date: and the years left on it
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been replaced
  • Your own insurance quotes: with the real main driver's details
