Nissan March in Singapore, a small car's road tax and insurance costs

The Nissan March 1.0 in Singapore: road tax of S$390.60 a year, its COE category and dated insurance prices that hold steady as the car ages.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Nissan March 1.0 is about as small as engines get on Singapore roads, and its yearly bills show it. Road tax is low, and the lowest insurance price barely moves with the car's age. This guide sets out both, plus the COE category.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show where the market sits. Your own price depends on your details.

Versions on the quote form

The new-car list read for this guide has no March on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Our quote form lists three versions:

  • March 1.0: 998cc
  • March 12S: 1,198cc
  • March 1.4: 1,386cc

The price page prices the March 1.0, the version most insurers quote.

COE

For the March 1.0, with its 998cc engine, the category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest. A used March keeps its COE until it expires, so check the date.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 998cc engine S$390.60 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19. The bigger versions start from a higher base.

The surcharge for cars more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 12S and 1.4 have bigger engines and pay more. The road tax page has their figures.

Here is what insurance costs

The Nissan March price page prices this case:

  • Car: March 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

14 insurers price it, across 24 plans. The lowest premium is S$545.00, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,121.82. That is S$576.82 more, or 106% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on the panel have no online price for the March.

The excess

Twelve of the 24 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Two carry S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One has no excess.

Four plans are estimates. The second-lowest premium, S$690.06, carries a lower excess of S$500. So the plans near the bottom of the range differ in more than price.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$922.38, S$377.38 more
  • 20% NCD: S$784.56, S$239.56 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$899.39, S$354.39 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$545.00, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$545.00, the same
  • Car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same

Your NCD is what moves this price. With none, the lowest price is 69% higher. A 20% NCD cuts that gap, but it still leaves S$239.56 more to pay. A 27-year-old with 30% NCD pays S$899.39.

Car age makes no difference at the lowest price. A new March, a 3-year-old one and an 8-year-old one all start at S$545.00. An older driver pays the same too, though one fewer insurer quotes.

These are lowest prices only; dearer plans may move differently.

Against similar small cars

The price page sets six cars with similar engines beside the March, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The March is 18% below it, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Chery QQ matches it. Other Nissan models are on the Nissan car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: no rise at the lowest price for a new or older car
  • For: none of six similar cars is cheaper to insure
  • Against: drivers with no NCD pay S$377.38 more at the lowest price
  • Against: the dearest insurer's lowest plan is about twice the lowest

Costs that depend on you

These vary too much to give one figure:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus work and town parking
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and times
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and battery in time
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you buy one

  • COE expiry: the date and years left
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service record: ask what has been done
  • Quotes with your own NCD: since that moves the price most
