Mitsubishi Space Star in Singapore, low road tax and what insurance costs

Mitsubishi Space Star 1.2 costs in Singapore: road tax of S$504.20 a year, its COE category and dated car insurance prices for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Space Star is a small car with a 1.2-litre engine, and its yearly costs reflect that. Road tax is low, and car insurance for a standard driver starts at a modest figure. This guide sets out both, with the COE category.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show how the market prices this car. Your own price will depend on your details.

The two versions

Our quote form lists two versions of the Space Star:

  • Space Star 1.2: 1,193cc
  • Space Star 1.3 Family: 1,299cc

The price page prices the Space Star 1.2, the version most insurers quote. The new-car list read for this guide has no entry for the Space Star on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.

Which COE category

The Space Star 1.2 has a 1,193cc engine. Its category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest. A used car carries its COE until it expires, so the years left count for a lot.

Road tax

For the 1,193cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$504.20 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

The surcharge on cars more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 1.3 Family has a slightly bigger engine, so its road tax is a little higher. The road tax page gives the exact figure.

Car insurance for the standard driver

The Mitsubishi Space Star price page prices this case:

  • Car: Space Star 1.2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price it, across 23 plans. The lowest premium is S$622.34, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,190.45. That is S$568.11 more, or 91% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Only one insurer on the panel has no online price for the Space Star. So you can compare almost the full panel.

The excess

The excess is what you pay on each claim. On this page:

  • S$600: ten plans
  • S$500: three plans
  • S$750: two plans
  • S$800: three plans
  • S$2,500: three plans
  • S$3,000: one plan
  • None: one plan

The second-lowest premium, S$757.35, carries an S$2,500 excess. Four plans are estimates. Read the excess beside each premium before you pick.

What changes the price

The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$932.05, S$309.71 more
  • 20% NCD: S$932.05, S$309.71 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$932.05, S$309.71 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$622.34, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$642.42, S$20.08 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$569.36, S$52.98 less

Without an NCD: the lowest price rises by 50%. This is the largest change on the page.

A young driver: aged 27 with 30% NCD, the lowest price is the same as with no NCD.

An older driver: the price holds at S$622.34, with one fewer insurer quoting.

Car age: an older Space Star costs less to insure at the lowest price, and a new one slightly more.

These are lowest prices only; dearer plans may move differently.

Against similar small cars

Six cars with similar engines appear on the price page, for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$688.21. The Space Star is 10% below that. Two of the six cost less to insure: the C-HR and the Qashqai. The Jazz is level with it. Other Mitsubishi models are on the Mitsubishi car insurance page.

Costs that depend on how you use it

These do not have one figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and the times you travel
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and battery over the years
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Questions to ask before you buy

A short list for a used Space Star:

  • How long is left on the COE? The papers show the expiry date.
  • When was it registered? That sets when the road tax surcharge begins.
  • What has been serviced or replaced? Ask for the record.
  • What will insurance cost you? Price it with your own details, since your NCD and age change the figure.
