Mitsubishi Pajero 3.8 in Singapore, what road tax and insurance cost

The Mitsubishi Pajero 3.8 in Singapore: a S$3,680.10 road tax base, Category B COE and dated car insurance prices for different drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Pajero 3.8 has a large engine, at 3,828cc. That shapes its yearly costs more than anything else. Road tax is high, and insurance varies a great deal from one insurer to the next.

This guide sets out those two yearly costs and the COE category. All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own price depends on your answers.

Versions on our quote form

The new-car list read for this guide has no Pajero on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Our quote form lists two versions:

  • Pajero 3.8: 3,828cc
  • Pajero 2000i: 1,999cc

The price page prices the Pajero 3.8, the version most insurers quote. The figures below are for that car. The 2000i has a much smaller engine, so its road tax is far lower.

The COE

The Pajero 3.8's 3,828cc engine is above 1,600cc. That puts it in Category B, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

On a used Pajero, the COE is already attached to the car. How many years it has left shapes what the car is worth to you. The COE page shows the latest results.

Road tax: the large fixed cost

LTA's formula gives the 3,828cc engine S$3,680.10 a year, before any surcharge. That figure was checked on 2026-10-19. It is the biggest yearly cost here that the facts can put a number on, larger than the lowest insurance premium several times over.

Older cars pay a surcharge on top:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On a base this size, the surcharge alone becomes a large sum. Check the registration date of any Pajero you consider. The road tax page has the 2000i's figure too.

Car insurance: lowest price against the rest

The Mitsubishi Pajero price page prices this case:

  • Car: Pajero 3.8, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

12 insurers price it, across 19 plans. The lowest premium is S$836.07. That plan allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,470.34. That is S$1,634.27 more, or 195% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The lowest price sits well clear of the rest. The next-lowest plan is S$1,127.93. So for this car, the gap between the first quote and the second can be large.

Four insurers on the panel do not price the Pajero online. For one of them, the online price covers electric cars only.

Excess

Nine of the 19 plans carry an S$600 excess. Three carry S$500 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500 and one S$3,000. No plan here comes without an excess.

Four plans are estimates. Their final price can change once the insurer sees your details.

How the price reacts

The price page changes one detail at a time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,319.75, S$483.68 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,319.75, S$483.68 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,319.75, S$483.68 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$836.07, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$861.03, S$24.96 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$764.82, S$71.25 less

Your NCD makes the largest difference. Without it, the lowest price is 58% higher. A young driver with a 30% NCD pays the same lowest price.

An older driver with a long record pays the same as the standard driver, with one fewer insurer quoting. An older car is cheaper to insure at the lowest price. These lines track the lowest price only, so other plans may move differently.

Similar large-engined cars

The price page compares five cars with large engines, same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$1,197.42. The Pajero is 30% below that, and none of the five is cheaper to insure. The Chrysler 300 is priced by only three insurers. More Mitsubishi models are on the Mitsubishi car insurance page.

On insurance cost alone

  • For: a lowest premium below all five similar cars
  • For: an older car costs less to insure at the lowest price
  • Against: a big gap between the lowest plan and the next
  • Against: losing your NCD adds S$483.68 at the lowest price

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking elsewhere
  • Petrol: a large engine, your distance and the pump price all play a part
  • ERP: your routes and travel times
  • Servicing and parts: tyres, brakes and other wear items; ask for the record
  • Depreciation: what you pay set against the COE years left

Summary of yearly costs we can show

  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,319.75
