Mercedes-Benz R300L in Singapore, costs to keep one on the road

Road tax on a 2,996cc engine, Category B COE and dated car insurance from 12 insurers for a used Mercedes-Benz R300L in Singapore.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The R300L is the 2,996cc version of the Mercedes-Benz R. In Singapore it is a used buy, and its yearly bills come mostly from road tax and car insurance. One thing stands out in the insurance figures: the premium moves less with the driver's NCD than it does for many cars. This guide sets out each cost in turn.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. Your own price will depend on your details.

The car priced

There is no R300L on the new-car list now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form prices the R300L 3.0 with its 2,996cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.

COE

The 2,996cc engine is above 1,600cc, so the R300L needs a Category B COE. That closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

An R300L on sale now has its COE paid. Ask how many years are left, and whether it has been renewed before. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 2,996cc engine S$2,380.40 a year, before any age surcharge.

Older cars pay more:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

At the top step, that is half as much again as the base. For many owners of an R300L, road tax will be a larger yearly bill than insurance. The road tax page explains the formula.

Insurance for the stated driver

The Mercedes-Benz R300L price page prices this example:

  • Car: R300L 3.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

The example uses a 3-year-old car, as all price pages do. An R300L for sale now may be older. Price the actual car before you agree a deal.

12 insurers price the example. The lowest premium is S$1,041.79 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,430.32. That is S$1,388.53 more, or 133% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Four insurers on our panel do not price this model online. Some prices shown are estimates.

Excess

The lowest plan carries S$600, the most common level here. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. One has none. Several ask S$2,500 or S$3,000. Read the excess with each premium.

Plan levels and dates

Several insurers list two or three plans for this car. The fuller ones cost more and may add cover, such as a courtesy car or protection for your NCD. Compare a basic plan with a basic plan, and a fuller one with a fuller one.

Each price also shows the date it was read. Some on this page are more than a week old, so check how recent each one is before you rely on it.

How the price moves

The lowest price with one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,203.41, S$161.62 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,203.41, S$161.62 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,203.41, S$161.62 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,041.79, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,041.79, the same
  • A car 8 years old: S$973.63, S$68.16 less

Losing the NCD adds 16% here, a smaller step than on many cars. So for this car, a lost NCD costs less than you might expect, though it is still S$161.62 a year. The younger driver lands on the same figure. The older driver and the new car change nothing at the lowest price. The 8-year-old car costs a little less. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The R300L is 16% below that, and only the BMW 7 Series is cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page links the other models.

Before you buy

  • COE: check the end date and whether it has been renewed.
  • Engine: confirm the 2,996cc engine on the log card.
  • Age: the first registration date sets the road tax step.
  • Records: ask for the service history and what is due next.
  • Your own quote: your NCD, age and experience will set your real price.

Costs that depend on you

These depend on how you use the car, so there is no single figure:

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus outings.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and when you drive them.
  • Repairs: tyres, brakes, a battery and other wear items over time.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left and the resale price.

The yearly figures

For the Mercedes-Benz R300L 3.0:

  • Road tax: S$2,380.40 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$1,041.79 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,203.41
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$973.63

For reference, a Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
