Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback ownership costs in Singapore

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback in Singapore: list price, COE, road tax and car insurance examples for several drivers, all dated.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The A-Class Hatchback is the smallest Mercedes-Benz on sale in Singapore. Buyers often come to it from a mass-market hatchback, so the question is what the badge adds to the yearly bills. This guide works through each cost: the price, the COE, road tax and car insurance.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own price will depend on your details. Treat these as a way to see the costs side by side.

The version on sale

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has one version, a hatchback made in Germany:

  • A-Class Hatchback Mild Hybrid A180 AMG Line: petrol-electric, 1,332cc, 129bhp

The insurance prices below are for the A180 AMG Line with the same 1,332cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.

List price

As listed on 2026-10-10, the A180 AMG Line was S$253,888, with COE included in the list price that day.

That figure moves with every COE round. A dealer's price today may differ, and offers can bundle different items. Compare what is included, not only the total.

Which COE it needs

With its 1,332cc engine, the A180 AMG Line needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The two were almost level in that round. Both change every round, so check the COE page for the latest.

Road tax

LTA's formula ties road tax to engine size. For the 1,332cc engine, it works out to S$585.72 a year before any age surcharge.

For a car past 10 years, a surcharge is added:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

A new car will not reach these for a decade. They matter more if you keep the car on after its first COE. The road tax page covers other engine sizes.

Insurance for one driver

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback price page prices this example:

  • Car: A180 AMG Line, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

11 insurers price that case. The lowest premium is S$787.96 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,256.64. That is S$468.68 more, or 59% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The gap is smaller than on some cars, but it is still several hundred dollars a year. Some prices on the page are estimates, so confirm them with the insurer.

Excess

Your excess is the amount you pay towards each claim. Most plans on this page set it at S$600, and some at S$500 or S$800. One plan has none, and one asks S$2,500. Weigh the excess against the premium, since a low premium can hide a high one.

Five insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

How the lowest price shifts

The price page changes one detail at a time and shows the new lowest price:

  • No NCD (0%): S$964.91, S$176.95 more
  • 20% NCD: S$964.91, S$176.95 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$964.91, S$176.95 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, unchanged
  • A new car, registered this year: S$811.71, S$23.75 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less

The NCD is the detail that matters most here. Without it, the lowest price rises by 22%. A new car costs a little more to insure than a 3-year-old one. These are lowest prices only, so other plans may move by different amounts.

Against six similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$742.05. The A-Class Hatchback sits 6% above it, and three of the six cost less to insure. So the Mercedes badge adds little to the premium for this driver. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page covers the rest of the range.

Costs that depend on you

A few costs swing too much from owner to owner for one number:

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus visits. A compact car fits most lots easily.
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price. The mild-hybrid system works alongside the petrol engine.
  • ERP: your routes and the times you travel.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what the warranty and any service package include, and what parts cost once they end.
  • Depreciation: the value lost over the COE's life turns on the price you pay and what the car fetches later.

The yearly costs we can put a figure on

For the A-Class Hatchback A180 AMG Line:

  • Road tax: S$585.72 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$787.96 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$964.91
  • Insurance, 8-year-old car: from S$721.59

The one-off costs, for reference: S$253,888 as listed on 2026-10-10, including COE. In the October 2026 1st round, COE closed at S$130,001 (Category A) and S$130,100 (Category B).
