The Mercedes-Benz A-Class on the new-car list is a hatchback with a 1.3-litre engine, and that small engine shapes much of the running cost. If you are moving up from a mass-market hatchback, the figures here show where the A-Class costs more and where it does not.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own details will give a different price.
One version on sale
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has a single A-Class, a hatchback made in Germany:
- A-Class Hatchback Mild Hybrid A180 AMG Line: petrol-electric, 1,332cc, 129bhp
The quote form lists 16 versions, because many older A-Class cars are still on the road. They run from the A 150 (1,498cc) to the A 200 (2,034cc), and include saloons such as the A200 AMG LINE SALOON (1,332cc). The insurance figures below are for the A 180 1.3 (1,332cc), the version most insurers quote.
List price
As listed on 2026-10-10, the A180 AMG Line was S$253,888, with COE included that day.
The figure moves with the COE from round to round. If you collect offers, check what each includes before comparing totals.
The COE
For the A 180 1.3, with its 1,332cc engine, the category depends on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. Bidding results change every round; see the COE page for the latest.
Road tax
A small engine keeps road tax down. For the 1,332cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$585.72 a year, before any age surcharge. The A180 on sale shares that engine size, so the figure covers it too.
Older cars pay a surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Some older A-Class versions have bigger engines, up to 2,034cc, and pay more. The road tax page works out each size.
Car insurance for the standard driver
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class price page prices one case:
- Car: A 180 1.3, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
14 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$787.96 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,256.64. That is S$468.68 more, or 59% on top. Prices include 9% GST.
The spread is narrower than on many cars, but the gap is still worth closing. Two insurers on the panel have no online price for the A-Class yet.
Excess
The excess is what you pay on each claim before cover starts. Most A-Class plans carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three plans ask S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has no excess at a higher premium. Compare both figures side by side.
When one detail changes
The price page lists the lowest premium with one change from the standard case:
- No NCD (0%): S$964.91, which is S$176.95 more
- 20% NCD: S$964.91, which is S$176.95 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$964.91, which is S$176.95 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$811.71, which is S$23.75 more
- Car 8 years old: S$721.59, which is S$66.37 less
Losing the NCD has the biggest effect, but here it adds 22%, a smaller rise than on many cars. A younger driver lands on the same lowest figure. An older driver pays the same as the standard case. These are lowest prices only, so other plans may move by different amounts.
How it compares with similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Honda Vezel: S$824.33
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Honda HR-V: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
They average S$742.05. The A-Class costs 6% more than that, and three of the six are cheaper to insure. Other Mercedes-Benz models are on the Mercedes-Benz car insurance page.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and around town.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price. The A180 on sale is a mild hybrid.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
- Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what the warranty and any service package include. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due over time.
- Depreciation: what the car loses over its COE life, set by what you pay and what it later fetches.
