The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been on Singapore roads for decades, so there are a great many versions to insure. That long history also shapes its insurance prices. This review looks at what you pay to insure one on today's examples, then at the other fixed costs.
Every premium here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own price depends on your answers.
The version that is priced
The C-Class on our quote form covers a long list of versions, from older C 180 and C 200 cars to diesels, estates, coupes and the C350E. Engines run from 1,497cc to 3,498cc.
The insurance prices below are for the C180 Sedan AVG (R17) LED (1,497cc), the version most insurers quote. If you own or plan to buy a different version, its price may differ.
On the new-car list read on 2026-10-10, three versions are on sale. All are listed as luxury cars made in South Africa:
- C180 AMG Line (mild hybrid saloon): 1,496cc, 168bhp
- C180 Avantgarde (mild hybrid saloon): 1,496cc, 168bhp
- C63 AMG S E Performance (plug-in hybrid saloon): 1,991cc, 671bhp
Here is what you'll pay to insure it
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class price page prices one case:
- Car: C180 Sedan AVG (R17) LED, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
14 insurers price it, and only two on our panel give no online price. The lowest premium is S$749.93. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,334.70. That is S$584.77 more, or 78% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
The catch at the bottom of the list. The lowest premium comes with a S$2,500 excess. The next-lowest, at S$811.71, has a S$600 excess. If you ever claim, the difference in excess outweighs the difference in premium. So compare the two numbers together.
The excess range. Across the page, excesses run from S$0 to S$3,000. Most plans carry S$600.
Workshops and plan types. Most plans are for authorised workshops. One allows any workshop or authorised workshops. One plan is described as collision only.
How the price moves
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,201.79, S$451.86 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,134.20, S$384.27 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,201.79, S$451.86 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, S$61.78 more, 13 insurers pricing
- A new car, registered this year: S$728.31, S$21.62 less, 13 insurers pricing
- A car 8 years old: S$713.61, S$36.32 less
No NCD is the costliest case, at 60% more on the lowest price. A 20% NCD helps a little, but not much.
A younger driver pays the same lowest price as a driver with no NCD.
An older driver, aged 65, pays a little more than the standard driver.
The car's age is unusual here. A new C-Class and an 8-year-old one both cost less at the lowest price than a 3-year-old car. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move differently.
Pros and cons for insurance cost
Pros
- Many insurers quote it online, so you have a wide field to compare.
- The spread between insurers is narrower than for many cars.
- The lowest price is lower for both a new and an 8-year-old car.
Cons
- The lowest premium carries a high excess.
- Losing your NCD lifts the lowest price by 60%.
- 4 of the six similar cars on the price page are cheaper to insure.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The C-Class costs 3% more. Other Mercedes-Benz models are on the Mercedes-Benz car insurance page.
The list price, COE and road tax
List price. As listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included that day:
- C180 AMG Line: S$280,888
- C180 Avantgarde: S$280,888
- C63 AMG S E Performance: S$724,888
COE. With a 1,497cc engine, the C180 Sedan AVG (R17) LED needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If it is more, it needs a Category B COE. The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. See the COE page for later rounds.
Road tax. For a 1,497cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$682.50 a year before any age surcharge. Larger engines pay more; the road tax page covers every size.
Age surcharge, for cars over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
What to check before you buy a plan
- The exact version on your log card, since prices vary across the range.
- The excess next to each premium.
- Whether the plan is for authorised workshops or allows any workshop.
- What a collision-only plan leaves out.
Costs that turn on your own use
Parking, petrol, ERP, servicing and depreciation all vary from owner to owner. Check season parking at your HDB block or condo. Ask what the warranty and any service package include. Depreciation depends on what you pay and what the car fetches later.
Summary of yearly costs we can show
For the C180 Sedan AVG (R17) LED (1,497cc), dated as shown:
- Road tax: S$682.50 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
- Insurance, standard driver: from S$749.93 a year (20 October 2026)
- Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,201.79
- Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$713.61
For reference: list prices from S$280,888 as listed on 2026-10-10, and a COE in the October 2026 1st round of S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
The bottom line
The C-Class has a wide field of insurers and a moderate spread of prices. The lowest headline premium has a high excess, so the plan just above it deserves a look. Your NCD matters more than the car's age.
