The Mercedes-Benz CLA now comes in two very different forms: hybrid and fully electric. That split matters for running costs in Singapore. This guide goes through what each cost item looks like for the CLA: list price, COE, road tax and car insurance.
The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are useful for comparison. They are not a quote.
The range on sale
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 lists the CLA as a sedan made in Germany, in seven versions:
- CLA Hybrid CLA180 AMG Line: petrol-electric, 1,499cc, 134bhp
- CLA Hybrid CLA180 Progressive: petrol-electric, 1,499cc, 129bhp
- CLA Hybrid CLA200 AMG Line Sport: petrol-electric, 1,499cc, 161bhp
- CLA Electric CLA200 AMG Line 58 kWh: electric, 148bhp
- CLA Electric CLA200 Progressive 58 kWh: electric, 148bhp
- CLA Electric CLA250+ AMG Line Sport 85 kWh: electric, 268bhp
- CLA Shooting Brake Electric CLA200 AMG Line 58 kWh: electric, 148bhp
Our quote form also covers older CLAs, including the 1,595cc CLA 180 and CLA 200 four-doors, 1,332cc versions and a 2,143cc CLA 220. The insurance figures below are for the CLA 180 4 DR (1,595cc), the version most of our insurers quote. That is an older car than the ones on sale now.
List prices
As listed on 2026-10-10, COE included as listed that day:
- CLA180 AMG Line and CLA180 Progressive: S$274,888
- CLA200 AMG Line Sport: S$293,888
- CLA200 AMG Line 58 kWh and CLA200 Progressive 58 kWh: S$289,888
- CLA250+ AMG Line Sport 85 kWh: S$328,888
- Shooting Brake CLA200 AMG Line 58 kWh: S$297,888
These change with each COE round. Compare what each dealer offer includes before you compare totals.
COE
For the CLA 180 4 DR, with its 1,595cc engine, the category turns on power. It needs a Category A COE at 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE above that.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The price page does not set out a category for the newer hybrid or electric versions, so check with the dealer. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
For the 1,595cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$739.96 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge starts after 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The electric CLAs have no engine size, so their road tax is worked out another way. See the road tax page.
Car insurance for one example
The Mercedes-Benz CLA price page prices this case:
- Car: CLA 180 4 DR, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% NCD, no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
12 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$767.38. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,406.66, which is S$639.28 more, or 83% on top. Prices include 9% GST.
That spread shows why one quote is not enough. Some figures are marked as estimates, so confirm them with the insurer.
The excess
The excess is what you pay on each claim before the insurer pays. Most plans here set S$600. Others set S$500, S$750 or S$800, one sets none, and one sets S$2,500. A plan's real cost includes the excess you might pay.
Four insurers on our panel have no online price for this model yet.
How the price moves
The price page changes one detail at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,131.99, S$364.61 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,131.99, S$364.61 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,131.99, S$364.61 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$838.59, S$71.21 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$790.47, S$23.09 more
- A car 8 years old: S$730.42, S$36.96 less
The NCD is the biggest single factor. Without it, the lowest price rises 48%. The older driver pays more than the 40-year-old, and the older car costs less. These are lowest prices only; other plans can move by other sums.
Similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page shows:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
These average S$724.93. The CLA is 6% above that, and four of the six cost less to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page links the rest of the range.
Costs that turn on your own use
- Parking: season parking at home and work, plus other stops.
- Petrol or charging: the hybrids use petrol. The electric versions need charging, at home if your car park has a charger, or at public points. Either way, the cost depends on how far you go.
- ERP: your routes and timings.
- Servicing: follow the maker's schedule, and ask what the warranty covers. For the electric versions, ask about the battery warranty too.
- Depreciation: what you pay set against what the car fetches later.
