This guide covers the older Mercedes-Benz B, the family hatchback sold here under several engine sizes over the years. If you are looking at one on the used market, the yearly costs are what you need: road tax and car insurance. The COE and the costs that depend on you come after.
Every insurance figure is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how prices compare. It is not what you will be charged.
The many B versions
Our quote form lists eleven versions of the B, from 1,332cc to 2,034cc:
- B 160: 1,495cc
- B 170 and B 180: 1,699cc
- B 180 1.3 and B 200 1.3: 1,332cc
- B 200 1.6: 1,595cc
- B 200 2.0 and B 200 Turbo: 2,034cc
- B 180 CDI: 1,991cc
- B 200 CDi: 1,990cc
- B 200 CDI Estate: 1,796cc
The insurance prices here are for the B 160 (1,495cc), the version most of our insurers quote. The other engines pay different road tax and may be priced differently.
What is on sale new
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has one current version, a hatchback made in Germany:
- B-Class B180 Progressive: petrol, 1,332cc, 128bhp, listed at S$258,888
That price is as listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included that day. It is the newer car, and it is reviewed on its own price page.
COE for the B 160
The B 160 has a 1,495cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If it has more power, it needs Category B.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car the COE is already paid, and its remaining years are in the price. The COE page has later rounds.
Road tax
For the B 160's 1,495cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$681.32 a year, before any age surcharge.
Many used B models are past the age where the surcharge starts:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The larger engines on the list pay more. Look up each one on the road tax page.
Insurance for the stated driver
The Mercedes-Benz B price page prices this case:
- Car: B 160, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% NCD, no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
14 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$700.28. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,213.34. That is S$513.06 more, or 73% on top. Prices include 9% GST.
So shopping around can save you hundreds of dollars a year on the same cover. A few prices on the page are estimates, so confirm them on the insurer's own site.
What the excess adds
The excess is what you pay before the insurer pays a claim. Most plans here use S$600. Others use S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan has no excess, and some ask S$2,500 or S$3,000. A high excess can wipe out a cheaper premium in a year when you claim.
Two insurers on our panel have no online price for this model yet.
What moves the premium
Each line changes one detail and shows the new lowest price:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,004.24, S$303.96 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,004.24, S$303.96 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,004.24, S$303.96 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, no change
- A new car, registered this year: S$721.59, S$21.31 more
- A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less
Without an NCD, the lowest price is 43% higher. The older car is cheaper to insure, which helps on the used market. These are lowest prices only; other plans can move by different sums.

Running costs with no fixed figure
- Parking: your season parking at home and at work, plus everything else.
- Petrol or diesel: some B versions are CDI diesels, so fuel costs differ by version. Check which one you are buying.
- ERP: depends on your routes and times.
- Upkeep: an older car may need tyres, brakes, a battery and other parts. Ask for its service record.
- Depreciation: set by what you pay and how many COE years remain.
