The ML400 4MATIC is a Mercedes-Benz with a 2,996cc engine, sold here only on the used market now. What matters to a buyer is the yearly cost. This guide breaks it down: the road tax on that engine, the car insurance spread, and the COE category. It ends with the costs that depend on you.
The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote, but they show how insurers compare for that driver.
The car on our quote form
The new-car list has no ML400 on sale now. So this guide has no list price, power figure or body type.
Our quote form prices the ML400 4MATIC (R19 BI) with a 2,996cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote, and every figure below is for it.
COE
The 2,996cc engine is above 1,600cc. So the ML400 needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
Since the car is used, the COE is already paid. The years left on it are part of what you are buying. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula sets the road tax for a 2,996cc engine at S$2,380.40 a year, before any age surcharge.
Older cars pay a surcharge on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
That base is high, so each step is a real increase. Read the registration date before you agree a price. The road tax page explains the formula.
Insurance: wide spread, low floor
The Mercedes-Benz ML400 price page prices this example:
- Car: ML400 4MATIC, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
11 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$1,046.37 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,945.84. That is S$1,899.47 more, or 182% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So the top lowest plan is close to three times the bottom one. Most plans sit nearer the lower end. Five insurers on our panel do not price this model online, and some of the prices shown are estimates.
Excess
The lowest plan carries S$600, as most plans here do. Others carry S$500 or S$800. One has none. Several ask S$2,500 or S$3,000. The excess is what you pay first on a claim, so check it beside each premium.
Plan levels
Several insurers list a basic plan and fuller ones. The fuller plans cost more and may add extras, such as a courtesy car. Compare similar plans across insurers.
Price dates
Each price on the page shows the date it was read. Some here were read more than a week ago and may have moved since.
What moves the price
The lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,421.37, S$375.00 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,421.37, S$375.00 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,421.37, S$375.00 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,143.46, S$97.09 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,064.65, S$18.28 more
- A car 8 years old: S$966.74, S$79.63 less
Without the NCD, the lowest price is 36% higher. The younger driver lands on the same figure. The older driver pays a little more. The 8-year-old car costs less to insure, which helps on a used ML400. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age:
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- BMW 7 Series: S$1,030.55
Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The ML400 is 16% below that, and only the BMW 7 Series is cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page has the other models.
Points to check
- Engine: confirm the 2,996cc engine on the log card. Other MLs had different engines.
- First registration: it sets the road tax step and the COE years left.
- Your own quote: price the car with your own NCD and age.
- Service history: ask what has been done and what is due.
Costs that depend on you
These have no fixed figure. They depend on your home, your routes and how long you keep the car:
- Parking: season parking at home and work. Check your own block's rates first.
- Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: the gantries on your routes and when you pass them.
- Servicing and parts: follow the maker's schedule, and get quotes for big items.
- Depreciation: what you pay set against what the car fetches later.
