Insurance is where the Mercedes-Benz GLS450 shows the widest range of any cost you can compare. For the same driver and car, the top lowest plan costs almost three times the bottom one. This guide starts there. It then covers the road tax on the 2,996cc engine, the COE category and the costs you will set yourself.
Every insurance figure here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It is a guide to how prices compare. It is not your quote.
Which car this covers
The GLS450 is not on the new-car list now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.
Our quote form prices the GLS450 with a 2,996cc engine, the version most of our insurers quote. Everything below is for that car.
Starting with insurance
The Mercedes-Benz GLS450 price page prices one example:
- Car: GLS450, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
8 insurers price it online. Another eight on our panel do not. The lowest premium is S$1,071.15 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,945.84. That is S$1,874.69 more, or 175% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
With half the field missing online, ask the other insurers too. You may find prices that are not shown here.
What the excess does to the picture
The lowest plan has a S$2,500 excess. The second-lowest, only a few dollars dearer, has S$600. On this page, most plans use S$600. Others use S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has no excess at all.
If you never claim, the excess costs you nothing. If you do, a S$2,500 excess means you pay that much of the bill first. Two plans with almost the same premium can leave you very differently placed after an accident.
Plan levels
Several insurers offer a basic plan and fuller ones. The fuller plans add cost, and may add cover such as a courtesy car. Check each plan's details before you compare. Set like against like: a basic plan from one insurer against a basic plan from another.
What moves the premium
The lowest price when one thing changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$2,013.47, S$942.32 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,622.84, S$551.69 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,903.01, S$831.86 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,173.76, S$102.61 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,064.65, S$6.50 less
- A car 8 years old: S$966.74, S$104.41 less
The NCD carries the most weight. With none, the lowest price is 88% higher. A younger driver costs almost as much extra. The car's age makes far less difference: a new car is a few dollars cheaper, an 8-year-old one about a hundred dollars cheaper. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.
How it sits against similar cars
The price page compares six cars with engines of a similar size, for the same driver and car age:
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- BMW 7 Series: S$1,030.55
Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The GLS450 comes in 14% below that. Only the BMW 7 Series is cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page links the other models.
Road tax
LTA's formula sets road tax for the 2,996cc engine at S$2,380.40 a year, before any age surcharge. For many owners, that will be a bigger yearly bill than the insurance.
Older cars pay a surcharge on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page explains how it is worked out.
The COE
At 2,996cc, the engine is above 1,600cc. That puts the GLS450 in Category B, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
A GLS450 bought today will be used, so its COE is paid. The years left on it are part of what you pay. The COE page has later results.
A short checklist
- Confirm the engine on the log card, since road tax follows it.
- Check the first registration date for the surcharge step and the COE years left.
- Quote your own details, including any other driver.
- Ask for the service history, and get quotes for big items due.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at home and work. Check your own block's rates first.
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and timing.
- Servicing and parts: follow the maker's schedule.
- Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches when you sell.
