Mercedes-Benz GLS400d AMG Line, Singapore road tax and insurance

The Mercedes-Benz GLS400d AMG Line in Singapore: Category B COE, road tax on its 2,925cc engine and dated car insurance from nine insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The GLS400d AMG Line is a Mercedes-Benz with a 2,925cc engine. It is not on the new-car list now, so this guide is for anyone looking at one used. It sets out the costs we can show in figures: the COE category, road tax and car insurance. It then lists the costs you will need to estimate yourself.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are a guide to how prices compare, not your quote.

The car on our form

With no entry on the new-car list, this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form prices the GLS400d AMG Line with its 2,925cc engine, the version most of our insurers quote.

COE category

The 2,925cc engine is above 1,600cc. So the GLS400d needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

On a used car, the COE is paid. Its remaining years are what you are buying, along with the car. The COE page has later results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 2,925cc engine S$2,297.12 a year, before any age surcharge.

From the 10th year, a surcharge is added:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula and other engine sizes.

Insurance for the example driver

The Mercedes-Benz GLS400d AMG Line price page prices this case:

  • Car: GLS400d AMG Line, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% NCD, no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

9 insurers price it. Seven on our panel do not price it online, so ask them directly if you want a fuller picture. The lowest premium is S$1,071.15 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,945.84. That is S$1,874.69 more, or 175% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

So the top lowest plan costs close to three times the bottom one. Most plans sit far below the top, though. Some prices shown are estimates; confirm them with the insurer.

The excess

The lowest plan comes with a S$2,500 excess. The next one, a few dollars dearer, comes with S$600. Most plans here set S$600. Others set S$500 or S$800, and one has none. If you are likely to claim, the S$600 plan may cost you less overall.

Plan levels

Several insurers list more than one plan. The fuller plans cost more and may add extras, for example a courtesy car while yours is repaired. Compare similar plan levels across insurers. A basic plan set against a top plan tells you little about which insurer is dearer.

What one change does

The lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,773.05, S$701.90 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,622.84, S$551.69 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,773.05, S$701.90 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,173.76, S$102.61 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,064.65, S$6.50 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$966.74, S$104.41 less

Losing the NCD lifts the lowest price by 66%. The younger driver lands on the same figure. Even a 20% NCD adds S$551.69. Car age matters much less: an 8-year-old car saves S$104.41.

The lesson from this list is that the driver matters more than the car. If the GLS400d will be shared with a younger driver, or you are rebuilding your NCD, price those details before you buy. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different amounts.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares:

Their average lowest price is S$1,137.15. The GLS400d AMG Line is 6% below that. Two of the six, the Camry and the Alphard, cost less to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page links the other models.

Before you buy

  • Your record: the example uses a 50% NCD. Price the car with your own.
  • The engine: the GLS has come with several engines. Confirm the 2,925cc engine on the log card.
  • The dates: first registration sets the surcharge step and the COE years left.
  • The history: ask what servicing has been done, and get quotes for anything due.

Costs that depend on you

These have no single figure, because they turn on where you live and how you use the car:

  • Parking: season parking at home and work. Check your own block's rates first.
  • Fuel: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and timing.
  • Servicing and parts: follow the maker's schedule.
  • Depreciation: what you pay set against what the car fetches later.

Summary of the figures

For the Mercedes-Benz GLS400d AMG Line:

  • Road tax: S$2,297.12 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$1,071.15 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,773.05

For reference, a Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
