The GLS400 is a Mercedes-Benz with a 2,996cc engine, sold here only on the used market now. If you are pricing one in Singapore, two figures stand out: a road tax bill of well over two thousand dollars, and an insurance premium that can almost double without a good NCD. This guide sets out those numbers and the others we can show.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not a quote.
The version priced
There is no GLS400 on the new-car list now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type for it.
Our quote form prices the GLS400 with its 2,996cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.
COE
The 2,996cc engine is above 1,600cc. The GLS400 needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
You would most likely buy a GLS400 used, with its COE already paid. The years left on it are in the asking price. The COE page has later results.
Road tax
LTA's formula sets road tax for the 2,996cc engine at S$2,380.40 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge comes in after 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
On this base, the later steps add a large sum each year. Check the car's age before you agree a price. The road tax page explains the formula.
Insurance: the example
The Mercedes-Benz GLS400 price page prices this case:
- Car: GLS400, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
10 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$1,071.15 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,945.84. That is S$1,874.69 more, or 175% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
That is close to three times from the bottom to the top. Six insurers on our panel do not price this car online, so there may be more prices to find by asking them directly.
Some of the prices shown were read more than a week ago. Each one carries its date, so check how fresh it is.
The excess
The lowest plan carries a S$2,500 excess. The next plan up, only a few dollars dearer, carries S$600. That pair shows why the excess matters as much as the premium. Elsewhere on the page, plans set S$500, S$600, S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has none.
Plan levels
Several insurers list a basic plan and one or two fuller ones. The steps between them can be a few hundred dollars. Read what each adds, such as a courtesy car or NCD protection, and decide whether it is worth the extra to you.
What moves the price
The lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$2,013.47, S$942.32 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,622.84, S$551.69 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,903.01, S$831.86 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,173.76, S$102.61 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,064.65, S$6.50 less
- A car 8 years old: S$966.74, S$104.41 less
The NCD makes the biggest difference. With none, the lowest price is 88% higher. The younger driver pays nearly as much extra. The car's age moves the price by about a hundred dollars at most. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by other sums.
Before you buy, quote your own NCD and anyone else who will drive the car. On a car like this, those details can change the bill by close to a thousand dollars.
