Mercedes-Benz GLB180 Progressive, yearly costs and insurance

A used Mercedes-Benz GLB180 Progressive in Singapore: road tax on its 1,332cc engine, the COE rule and dated car insurance from 12 insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The GLB180 Progressive pairs the boxy GLB body with a small 1,332cc engine. It is not on the new-car list now, so in Singapore you would buy one used. This guide lays out what it costs to own each year. It covers road tax, car insurance and the COE rule, then the costs that turn on your own use.

The insurance prices here are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not your premium.

The car we priced

With no entry on the new-car list, this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form prices the GLB180 Progressive with its 1,332cc petrol engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote. Every figure below is for that car.

The COE rule

For a 1,332cc engine, the COE category turns on power. The GLB180 Progressive needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. For a used car, those figures matter less than the years left on its own COE. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,332cc engine S$585.72 a year, before any age surcharge. Road tax follows engine size, so the small engine keeps this bill modest.

Past 10 years, a surcharge is added:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page gives the formula for other engines.

Car insurance for one driver

The Mercedes-Benz GLB180 Progressive price page prices this example:

  • Car: GLB180 Progressive, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

12 insurers price the car. The lowest premium is S$787.96 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,265.83. That is S$477.87 more, or 61% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The spread is narrower than on many cars, but it is still close to S$500 a year, every year you keep the car. Four insurers on our panel have no online price for this model, and some prices shown are estimates.

The excess

Most plans here carry a S$600 excess, the lowest included. Others carry S$500 or S$800. One plan has none, and one asks S$2,500. The excess is what you pay first on a claim. Weigh it against any saving on the premium.

Plan levels

Some insurers list several plans, from a basic one up to a fuller one. The fuller plans can cost a few hundred dollars more. Read what each adds before you compare one insurer's basic plan with another's top plan.

How each change moves the price

  • No NCD (0%): S$986.18, S$198.22 more
  • 20% NCD: S$986.18, S$198.22 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$986.18, S$198.22 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, no change
  • A new car, registered this year: S$811.71, S$23.75 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less

The NCD makes the biggest difference, at 25% more without it. That is a smaller jump than on many cars. The younger driver lands on the same figure. The older car is cheaper to insure. These are lowest prices only; other plans may change by other amounts.

Against six similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$742.05. The GLB180 Progressive is 6% above that, and three of the six are cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page links the rest of the range.

Before buying a used one

  • Engine size: confirm the 1,332cc on the log card. Larger GLB engines pay much more road tax.
  • Registration date: it fixes the surcharge step and the COE years left.
  • Price dates: each price on the page shows the day it was read. Rates can change, so a price read a week or more ago may have moved.
  • Your own quote: price the car with your own NCD and age.

Costs that depend on you

The figures above are the costs set by the car and the insurers. The ones below are set by you: where you live, how far you go and how long you keep the car.

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus outings.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and times.
  • Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery. Ask what has been done.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches when you sell.

The yearly figures

For the GLB180 Progressive:

  • Road tax: S$585.72 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)

  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$986.18
